Dear Sybase,
I have a setup file for SQL Anywhere 12.01.
Later on I have installed some EBF's, up to EBF 3769
If I now want to change my installation (add options or inspect products) I get this message "A newer version of SQL Anywhere is already installed, setup cannot continue).
Why is it so cumbersome to update an existing installation. I cannot find any newer version on the download page so my only option is to uninstall entire SA12, install again with new options and apply EBF's.
It's silly enough to do this on my own computer but it gets worse when I want to do this for a customer. A job that normally could take 5-10 minutes turns in to a complete uninstall and reinstall with the risks involved, add to that (and I think I am not alone) the job has turned into a late-night event since we cannot shut down their system in normal work hours.
Request clarification before answering.
I'm assuming you are using the Windows version.
In order to add components or change other installation options, you should not re-run the original setup (i.e. one from the GA version). Trying to re-run that setup or one from an older EBF than the one installed will fail with the error message you have mentioned.
Instead, you should open the according setup in the "Software" control panel entry and use "Modify setup" (or whatever this feature is named in your OS version - I'm using a German version, so I can't tell the English names). Now you can modify the list of components to install/deinstall.
AFAIK, that's how it works - I'm not claiming there could not be better (or better documented) ways...
