The W3C is putting the finishing touches on a Social Interest Group and Social Web Working Group proposal for new activities.

W3C Interest groups are public inclusive forums that are open to the public. The Social Interest Group will formulate and steer standardization in social across the W3C and work in coordination with other standards bodies and community led efforts. Expected deliverables include a Social Architecture Report, Use-case and Requirements Report, and recommendations around social vocabularies. The Interest Group may also make recommendations for Recommendation Track deliverables.  The Interest Group will be a follow-on to the recently completed Social Business Community Group which hosted the Social Business Workshop last August.  That workshop was attended by more that 70 individuals representing a broad spectrum of business and technical folks working in the topic of social.

W3C Working Groups are charged with developing W3C Recommendation Track deliverables as well as non-normative documents which can eventually go to Recommendation track.  The Social Web Working Group will be looking at Social Data Formats Recommendation Trak, and Social API leveraging OpenSocial 2.5 and HTML5 features, Federation Protocol, and Social Use Cases for non-normative deliverables.

Both groups will go through final internal review and approval before being announced to the general public.
