On Friday November 30th, I had the pleasure to witness the final pitch practice by two University of Illinois Chicago student teams who are engaged in SAP Next-Gen projects for the UIC Next-Gen Digital Health Chapter. The projects are sponsored by UI Health but benefitted from expert contributions from SAP customer Medline and professionals at the Bosch Connectory.

Two compelling use cases have driven these purpose driven projects for UI Health Equipment Tracking and Ulcer Staging; both of which directly align with directly with SDG Goal #3 - Good Health and Well Being. Through a unique collaboration between UI Health, SAP, Bosch and Medline, two projects were undertaken to develop proof of concept applications that can intelligently track and manage equipment used by patients, such as wheelchairs, walkers and other equipment, leveraging sensor, IoT, blockchain and other advanced technologies. Furthermore, certain patient impacts from using the equipment, such as ulcer staging, can be monitored. The projects feature use of IoT sensors and the SAP Leonardo Hyperledger Fabric on SAP Cloud Platform to track equipment movement and establish a foundation for future clinical applications.

Through the newly formed Next-Gen Chapter at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), the UIC College of Business and College of Medicine are collaborating on delivering digital innovation to the life sciences. The Next-Gen Laboratory serves as a center of knowledge that concentrates expertise and resources in exponential technologies. In addition to being a hub for networking and knowledge exchange, Next-Gen provides member firms with access to resources that would not otherwise be easily or economically obtainable. Through Next-Gen’s co-innovation partnerships, enterprises have exclusive access to early talent, futurists, systems thinkers, designers, strategists, modelers and data scientists to help innovate and solve complex problems. Next-Gen provides firms with a cost-effective alternative to rapidly realize innovation outcomes that would not be easily achievable in a normal corporate environment.

With one of the first training programs in clinical informatics and a nationally acclaimed information technology department, the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine - University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System (UI Health) stands as a leader in using cutting edge technologies to change medicine for good. UI Health’s location in the Illinois Medical District in proximity to Chicago’s hub of healthcare technology startups further positions us to form dynamic partnerships that will shape new ideas and foster innovation while keeping our commitment to patient-centered care and health equity.

As market leader in enterprise application software, SAP helps companies of all sizes and industries run better. We create the foundation and gateways to connect the digital healthcare network to core solutions for patient engagement, care delivery, care collaboration, clinical analytics, and personalized medicine.

This coming Friday, the student projects will be featured at an industry SAP Next-Gen Chapter event and at the UIC Information & Decision Sciences Project Expo. SAP executives will be presenting at the morning event and several SAP professionals will serve as judges for the project expo.
