I joined Sybase in January 1996 and have been here ever since. With the acquisition of Sybase by SAP in 2010, though, things changed. We left the relative comfort of the world of databases and data movement tools to the world of applications and helping companies, big companies, run their business. Over the years, it seemed as if the legacy Sybase software wasn't getting the same attention that it had before.
Having lived through this for nearly a decade, I can say that the technologies have continued to evolve and have found new and exciting homes within the SAP landscape. SAP ASE (Sybase ASE) was quickly enhanced to be a platform for a majority of SAP's business applications. SAP IQ was integrated into SAP business applications (ECC, Business Suite, Business Warehouse, BW/4HANA, and S/HANA) as the historical archival engine to handle large amounts of data.
In 2019,
Prof. Dr. h.c. mult. Hasso Plattner, co-founder of SAP and Chairman of the SAP Supervisory Board, announced the next generation of SAP HANA, the SAP HANA Cloud. As part of his presentation at Sapphire 2019, he described his vision for how SAP IQ (Sybase IQ) would be used as the data lake technology. See a detailed interview
here on that topic. At the end of March 2020, the SAP HANA Cloud was released with SAP IQ playing a pivotal role as the data lake technology able to store and manage hundreds of terabytes to petabytes of structured and semi-structured data.
The Sybase technology is getting the attention and being used within the SAP ecosystem. This culminated in a joint press release between
Irfan Khan and
Gerrit Kazmaier on the
future of SAP ASE, SAP IQ, and SAP Replication Server. This press release reiterated our
commitment to the long-term enhancement, maintenance, and support of on-premise SAP ASE, SAP IQ, and....
I hope I've been able to capture your attention and pique your curiosity on what we are, and have been, doing with SAP ASE, SAP IQ, and SAP Replication Server. As a follow-on to the press release, we are now formally launching events related to the vision and roadmaps of these technologies.
