Usha Saves Big on SAP HANA Implementation
From sewing machines to ceiling fans, it seems you can find Usha International Limited products in almost every household in India. Usha wanted to continue building on this success with fast, market-driven business decisions, but found it hard to keep up because of its outdated databases and hardware that was nearing the end of its useful life. Usha knew what it needed – even faster performance from its SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse (SAP NetWeaver BW) component, which had been growing by more than 20% annually in recent years.
Mapping Out the Project
Usha engaged a project team, which included SAP Consulting and value engineering experts, to analyze the company’s needs, consider options, and develop a business case. Two approaches were considered: adding new hardware or replacing the existing database with the SAP HANA database. Company leaders saw that SAP HANA would give them the opportunity to significantly shorten data-gathering processes, integrate a variety of data sources, and deliver high performance analytics.
Finding the Right Migration Path
As an early adopter of the technology in India, Usha worked with a dedicated SAP ramp-up coach *** project lead from SAP Consulting Center of Excellence and used SAP Enterprise Support services throughout the implementation process. Budget constraints and timeline pressures meant the SAP team needed to cut the implementation time and deliver at lower cost than a traditional SAP HANA implementation. Given the size of the BW database, SAP consultants were able to take the configuration and reload the data from the two primary sources: SAP ERP and SAP Supply Chain Management, saving valuable time.
40% Faster Implementation with Zero Reporting Blackout Period
The streamlined and structured approach helped Usha complete the entire project in only four weeks (40% time savings compared to conventional BW on HANA migration projects) – rolling out the solution to 16 branch offices, 30 depots, and four manufacturing plants. In doing so, the company established a future-ready platform for its enterprise-wide business intelligence strategy.
This modified migration approach kept the reporting blackout period to zero and allowed Usha to use the optimum number of SAP HANA units to support its new analytics landscape. SAP HANA improved query performances by an average of 50 times, increased data compression by a factor of nine, and reduced the data load time-window by 90%.
