Mobile’s big at SAP, right? It’s big everywhere of course, but when it comes to SAP’s mobile technology, there’s a whole lot of information available out there - perhaps too much. I joined SAP a little more than a year ago and one of the things that’s been challenging for me is to come up to speed on all of our mobile development tools & technologies. The products I work with are primarily the ones that came through the Sybase Acquisition (Sybase Unwired Platform [SUP] and Sybase Mobiliser) plus our recent acquisition of Syclo (and their Agentry platform).
I’ve been reading through the documentation (available at http://sybooks.sybase.com/sybooks/sybooks.xhtml) and building some apps using the server and development tools. There’s a lot of good information available on the SAP Community Network at the developer center http://developer.sap.com and, of course, the mobile developer center at http://scn.sap.com/community/developer-center/mobility-platform (including free access to the SAP Mobile Platform [SMP] – more on that topic in a subsequent post).
What’s needed though are some good, thorough training sessions on our mobile technologies. SAP has the SAP HANA Academy (http://www.saphana.com/community/implement/hana-academy) which has a series of video training sessions designed to help you come up to speed on HANA and, more importantly, how to solve specific problems using HANA. We need something like that for our mobile technologies.
Back in late 2012 we started work on the SAP Mobile Academy and launched it in March of this year. It is a site where developers can find video training sessions on many different aspects of SAP’s mobile products. You can access the Academy here: http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-36054 and you can read my colleague Carolyn Fitton’s introduction to it here: http://scn.sap.com/community/mobile/blog/2013/02/24/introducing-sap-mobile-academy.
Essentially what you’ll find there are a series of videos on many different SAP mobile technologies. Right now there are videos for the SAP Mobile Platform plus SAP Afaria. Over time we’ll add additional topic areas to the site. Our goal is to continue to evolve this and add new videos as often as we can. Today it’s nothing more than video tutorials, but we also have presentation materials and application source code we want to share – we’re just trying to find the best place to put it so that you can easily access it.
Right now there are over 30 videos in the SMP section of the Academy. I was the content owner for the project, so you’ll hear my voice in many of the introduction videos plus all of the BlackBerry videos. The other videos in the Academy were recorded by my colleagues – experts on SAP’s mobile products distributed throughout the world. If you watch enough of the videos, you’ll hear voices from several continents and a couple of islands.
Check it out when you get a chance and let me know what you think.
