The SAP Mentor Spotlight Interview Series highlights key strategic topics, such as UI5, learning, and other topics, and provides insights from Mentors and SAP leaders on turning ideas into innovative approaches that impact people, process, and technology. This blog post is the second in a two-part series. View Part 1.

SAPUI5 - Connecting Innovation (Part 2)

Many organizations face the challenge of having multiple systems with multiple interfaces. Developers are faced with building apps with a consistent UX using a variety of UI controls, resulting in designs that adhere to SAP and industry standards.

As the group of experts from SAP and the SAP Mentors continue their discussion (Part 2 video above), they zero in on SAPUI5, TypeScript, JavaScript framework, and the UI libraries that help developers create cross-platform enterprise-ready web applications in an efficient way.

The SAP Mentors recognize the value and challenges associated with hundreds of UI controls, aligned with the latest SAP Fiori design guidelines, with built-in support for data binding, routing, message handling, and the ability to leverage the open source alternative: OpenUI5.

During this session they discussed:

  • TypeScript –  When developing applications, what challenges exist with enabling TypeScript for the UI5 parts, by way of libraries and controls with a huge code base.  Insights on writing a script, to parse the metadata, and generate TypeScript definitions to validate usability.

  • Libraries – How the outlook today and the future looks to help make libraries more consumable within the TypeScript and JavaScript across multiple platforms. What big improvements would the experts like to see for better library management.

  • Delivering Change – How developers want quick time to value with training, demos, and how-to’s centered around a road-tested toolkit, code, and frameworks. How the SAPUI5 team is focused on compatibility and bringing new innovative capabilities to SAP Fiori apps.

As Peter said during this session,This year everything came together, and you have one solution. Now you can use all the pieces together.”  A key mission in the upcoming year will include further developing libraries to assess how development looks today, and how developers are writing their controls to achieve the magic they provide for their organizations and customers.

SAP and the SAP Community provide many SAPUI5 resources to support UI5 Integration.

A few questions to you all:

  • How do you leverage TypeScript and Libraries Management when developing new apps?

  • What are your current challenges and future trends that you would like to see discussed in further sessions?

It would be great to hear what you think in the comments below!
