Latest Update January 2022: If you would like to learn more about Asha Sreedhar who worked with us on the Neurodiverse microlearning, she has published her story on C.A.R.E. for Autism.

Hint: For those new to the topic, accessibility is often abbreviated to the numeronym a11y, where the number 11 refers to the number of letters omitted.

Last week, just in time for International Day for People with Disabilities 2021, SAP released a set of Accessibility microlearning videos for our core solution SAP Fiori for SAP S/4HANA.

These are the first videos in what is hoped to be a growing collection of content to assist business users with accessibility needs and their IT support teams, including administrators, developers, and accessibility advocates.

In this blog post you will find some answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) to help you explain these to your teams, including:

  • What is the expected audience for the videos?

  • Why are the videos aimed at business users rather than a11y compliance requirements?

  • Who made the videos?

  • Why is the focus SAP Fiori for SAP S/4HANA? What about other solutions?

  • What release of SAP Fiori for SAP S/4HANA was used for the recordings?

  • Which topics are covered so far?

  • What topics are upcoming?

  • Why do the Screen Reader videos have visuals?

  • Where do you find the Microlearnings?

  • How long are the videos?

  • Do the videos have closed captions?

  • Can you adjust the playback speed of the videos?

  • Can you download the videos to play offline?

  • Do the videos have transcripts?

  • Where can I find out more about SAP accessibility for administrators and IT support teams?

If you would like to suggest more accessibility videos you would like created, please tell us in the blog comments.

What is the expected audience for the videos?

Primarily the intended audience is Business Users.

However the information is also useful for disability advocates, administrators, support teams, and others to understand what is available for users with accessibility needs.

Why are the videos aimed at business users rather than a11y compliance requirements?

This was a deliberate choice. Compliance to accessibility standards such as WCAG, US section 508, and BITV are measures intended to help ensure accessibility. for all However, these standards are complex can be open to multiple interpretations particularly in different contexts. Another consideration is that compliance does not necessarily guarantee usability.

Since SAP provides business software, our aim is to focus on inclusive usability which enables business users to use our software to do their work.

Who made the videos?

The videos were made by a small team including some of our own people with disabilities and some of our consultants who assist customers who have specific accessibility requirements.  Our global accessibility team also provided advice and guidance.  Our team involved members from Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the USA.

Why is the focus SAP Fiori for SAP S/4HANA? What about other solutions?

SAP Fiori for SAP S/4HANA is our core solution so it makes sense to provide those first. The intent is for other solutions to be included over time.

What release of SAP Fiori for SAP S/4HANA was used for the recordings?

The videos were prepared on SAP Fiori for SAP S/4HANA 2020 FPS2.

Why do the Screen Reader videos have visuals?

Screen Readers are not just used by the visually impaired. There can be many reasons for using a screen reader, such as people with dyslexia who use a screen reader to read sections of text.

Even some Screen Reader users who are visually impaired may also have some low or limited vision that can be used to supplement the screen reader information.

Administrators and support teams also need to understand what is happening in the system when a screen reader is being used.
