Welcome to the new SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio space on SCN. Don’t forget to follow this space for latest news about SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio (aka SAP Zen).

REMINDER 1: SAP launched a public beta program and is accepting applications through September 14th. There is still time to join.

REMINDER 2: There will be great SAP Zen session at the SAP BusinessObjects User Conference in Orlando:

But this blog is not just to remind you. I have some fun to share, as I had the great pleasure to test drive SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio
beta with Windows 8 Pre-Release on a Fujitsu Lifebook T-Series with touchscreen.

Disclaimer: This is beta software on pre-release OS on not OS certified hardware. Don’t pin me down to the details in this first blog. It is planned as a series of three.

After installation the first task is to find the SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio tile in the Windows 8's Metro interface. Sounds easy, but can take some time. With a touchscreen in front of me, I never know if touchpad or touchscreen works better. Practice and time will solve this.

The Design Studio started up fast and my SAP colleague Ya-Chi Lu had some most current dashboards with her to test. In the design environment touchpad or mouse is my tool of choice, but once you execute your dashboard the touchscreen is super. The possibilities to navigate with fingers or pen on your screen twice the iPad size will give a lot of new use cases. The executives and power users will love it – I do already.

Especially the touch-less pen-over functionality to show additional data or information is really helpful and you don’t have to clean your screen every hour.

More detailed functionality tests will follow after SBOUC and published in the second blog. Also planned is to test the dashboard deployment to a no-name 7” Android 4.0 tablet. It will be interesting to compare such a low-budget tablet vs iPad vs laptop touchscreen in regards to handling and usability.

Stay tuned.

Best regards,

Matthias Wild - proud to be part of SAP Global IT where SAP runs SAP.
