In this year’s TechEd at Las Vegas, I was among few other colleagues from our department to represent SAP IT. Our objective was to share the inside story as how SAP runs SAP. A fact that we are our own customer as well and why wouldn’t we be, as best run companies runs SAP!!

Mainly we were presenting HANA, Simplified finance, Cloud for Customer, BI, Infrastructure and mobility. My team represented the Enterprise mobility team (martin.lang, Sanket Firodiya, Lisa Brown, julia.lakatos and florian.heretsch). While other colleagues (harry.hundermark, barbara.lapp, leonid.nisenzon, nathan.oyler, michael.golz, eileen.butler, thomas.delaloy and netmadan) were representing the other topics.

At our booths, we talked to various customers, partners and colleagues; sharing our experience as how we implement and support our internal systems. Most of the attendees were curious about how we went about it and of course, we were happy to go over the details and engaged them into discussing relevant areas.

On the mobility topic, we addressed generic queries like what is our mobile strategy, what apps have we implemented, why have we implemented native as well as Fiori/SAPUI5 apps. What are the pros and cons for going native versus Fiori/SAP UI5. Our take on the performance, maturity of the products like Netweaver Gateway and Fiori/SAP UI5, some asked about Hana Cloud Platform and were pleasantly surprised to know that we have apps running on it!

We shared our stories and experience about implementing standard native (device specific) apps, standard Fiori apps as well as custom apps (again both native and SAP UI5 based) that we have developed and deployed in our mobile landscape.

By the way, when I say standard apps; I mean apps that were developed by the SAP Product team which are available on app store (Apple app store/Google play) and backend add-ons available at SAP Market place for customers to download and implement. Apps like “SAP Customer Financial Factsheet”, “Receivables Manager”, “Cloud for Customer”, “Travel and Expense for Cloud” to name a few. Fiori app examples includes Purchase Order approval, Invoice approval, Shopping cart approval, Shopping cart tracking app etc. which were made available and improved during various Fiori waves.

The popular (inside SAP) examples of some of the custom apps that we have developed and shared included SAP EasyConnect, SAP Wire, SAP Pricing etc. We have also developed a tracking frame work to keep track of the usage of these applications (which just happens to be on HANA cloud). These ‘custom’ apps are something we developed to tailor our business requirements and are not available as a product that could be sold (yet).

We shared how we went about implementing these apps, how our mobile landscape looks like (End-to-End connectivity), how we developed gateway services or installed add-ons to enable them, how we develop native apps and how we engage designers and UX experts for the custom apps that we develop. we also talked about SAP Personas and our experience with it.
