Internet of Things (IoT) is the latest buzz word in today’s market and is based on the concept of connecting everything to each other or to the internet. With this growing network of connections, it becomes important for us to see how effectively end users can access documentation.

Akhil Harikrishnan (Information Developer for Oil & Gas and Mill Products) and Suresh Srinivasan (Information Developer for PI analytics DW HANA Modeler) participated in the STC India Conference as speakers and presented the topic, User Assistance Strategies for IoT Applications.

The Society for Technical Communication (STC) is a professional association dedicated to the advancement of technical communication. Technical communicators research and create information about technical processes or products directed to a targeted audience through various forms of media.

The 18th STC India annual conference was held at Novotel in Hyderabad on the 9th and 10th of December. The conference began with a keynote from Scott T. Miller, Information Architect, Oracle Apps Information Development. The keynote was followed with learning sessions on various topics related to user assistance, technical writing, translation, tools and methodologies, and so on.

The topic, User Assistance Strategies for IoT Applications at STC India conference, emphasized on why standard documentation approaches are not sufficient for IoT use cases, and the need for new user assistance strategies. Taking the examples of smart homes and smart railways, the session explained the different approaches to deliver user assistance content or IoT cases. The session had demos on how tag technologies (Beacons and NFC’s), virtual reality (VR’s), interactive graphics, and augmented reality (AR) can be used to disseminate user assistant content for IoT scenarios. The participants experienced how to read user assistance data from NFC’s, and how beacons can be used to deliver content. The session witnessed large participants and was well received.

The event concluded with a networking dinner followed by awards and recognition for winners of various competitions and for volunteers.
