As I write this blog post, I’m listening to the livestream of the keynote of DSAG’s 2020 Technology Days. DSAG is the German speaking SAP user group, which consists of more than 60,000 members from the DACH region.
Steffen Pietsch, DSAG Board member responsible for Technology, addressed many important topics in his keynote. One topic is about the extensibility of SAP applications through events and APIs. He stressed that it is critical for customers to have consistency for their domain objects in different SAP applications, and he referred to three key initiatives from SAP that addresses this critical challenge, namely Domain Model Alignment (DMA), ONE Master Data Service ( OneMDS) and SAP Graph.
In this blog, I will focus on SAP Graph and talk about the journey the project had so far. I will write about DMA and OneMDS in later blogs.
Before going into the details let me share some key definitions.
What is SAP Graph?
SAP Graph is the easy-to-use API for the data of the Intelligent Enterprise from SAP. It provides developers with a set of curated, intuitive, easy-to-understand APIs that they can use to build new extensions and applications.
What is the Intelligent Enterprise?
Intelligent Enterprises use the latest technologies to turn insight into action across the business – in real time. As a result, they accelerate data-driven disruption and process automation, launch new business models, deliver exceptional experiences, and more. An Intelligent Enterprise connects experiences and operations using experience management (XM) solutions, a business technology platform, and a suite of applications. So what’s been the journey so far for SAP Graph?
At the beginning of Q1-2019, we had the initial idea for SAP Graph and at the same time another team was working on an aligned domain model around master data objects for SAP’s Intelligent Enterprise. Quickly a talented team was setup within SAP Central Engineering to build a prototype and provide a proof of concept for SAP Graph using the draft version of the aligned domain model.
With the successful proof of concept, an official SAP Graph team was formed, and the development phase was kicked off with a core group of developers in Q2-2019. From the very start, we wanted to focus on enabling SAP Graph to improve the developer experience when working with SAP’s Intelligent Enterprise suite. With this in mind, we onboarded 6 partners, mostly small to mid-size partners, in a pilot program to better understand the user segment, and also incorporate their feedback along the way.
During the opening keynote at SAP TechEd Las Vegas, SAP’s CTO Juergen Mueller officially announced SAP Graph to the world, which was accompanied by a great showcase from Citrix one of our Pilot beta program partner. Juergen also announced the launch of SAP Graph's Private Beta Program. Moreover, at SAP TechEd Barcelona, Jan Schaffner, Head of Central Engineering, followed this up with a lightning talk on SAP Graph, which was also joined by a demo from our pilot program partner Oliver IT.
Our private beta program received great attention with about 732 applicants, which gave our Product team the difficult task of selecting a maximum of 10 partners for the program, to make it more engaging and manageable. Thanks to the pilot program and the ongoing private beta program, we were able to identify key architectural changes that are essential to making the solution more scalable, reliable, and ultimately allow us to evolve the solution further.
We’re currently working with selected private beta partners to understand their needs, validate our strategy, validate new features, prioritize our requirements and discover new possibilities. Next steps for SAP Graph will be discussed in more details in an upcoming blog post. Stay tuned!
