Obsolete BW DataSources are not released for ODP-SAP replication - what to do?

This is a technical Blog Post for SAP BW and SAP BW/4HANA consultants. As part of your project you want to take advantage of the ODP-SAP replication API to extract data e.g. from a SAP ERP or SAP S/4HANA on Premise system using BW DataSources.

You have worked through the different sources of information and applied the required SAP Notes (152188, 193142, 2232584). Now you are in the situation that a DataSource currently used in your systems is considered as obsolete by SAP and therefore not officially released for ODP-SAP replication.

Find below a list of BW DataSources that are considered as obsolete. If available, the DataSources that can be used instead are mentioned in column 'Replacement / Alternative".

Disclaimer: The list - which does not claim to be exhaustive - gives an indication which data sources can be considered as a replacement. It is still necessary to further check if the replacement / alternative mentioned suits your specific business requirements.

What can I do, if a suitable replacement for an obsolete DataSource cannot be found?

Technically, it is always possible to expose a standard SAP DataSource for the ODP-SAP replication by maintaining a corresponding entry in table ROOSATTR in the relevant source system with OLTPSOURCE = <Technical Name of DataSource> and EXPOSE_EXTERNAL = 'X'.

On this way you could also enable ODP extraction for obsolete SAP standard DataSources.

Just take into considerations when doing so:

    • SAP does not recommend to use obsolete DataSources.

 

    • After you enabled data sources for ODP extraction by your own for a standard DataSource which is not officially released via SAP Note 2232584, potential issues when using this particular DataSource in the ODP context will not be supported by SAP.

 

    • Therefore you will need to test the extraction of the DataSource via the ODP framework throughly and the usage is on your own risk.
