Which came first: The can opener or the can? You might assume they were developed together. If you have ever tried to open a can with anything other than a can opener, you know it’s a tall order.

Surprisingly, though, the can came first by nearly fifty years. Humanity spent half a century hacking at their cans with knives and other household implements. Finally, an inventor saw the need for a better way, and the rest is history. That’s the very definition of “Necessity is the mother of invention.”

In the business world, it's more fitting to say, “Necessity is the mother of innovation.” Every advancement comes from addressing a need, whether it’s the customers’ need, the business’ need, or both. There’s certainly no shortage of new and exciting necessities popping up these days, and we’re seeing some amazing innovation arising to meet them.

‘Necessity is Driving Innovation’ is the topic of this episode of the SAP Business Technology Platform Better Together: Customer Conversations series.

In this episode will hear from Endress+Hauser Digital Solutions; a global leader in measurement and automation. They have made amazing strides in developing a customer-delighting digital solution. We’ll sit down with Mike Cook, Mike Cook, PhD, IIoT Collaboration Manager, Endress+Hauser Digital Solutions, for a thought-leadership podcast and then a LinkedIn practitioners’ conversation:

  1. Podcast: Mike will join host Tamara McCleary, CEO at Thulium, and Theodora Lau, Founder of Unconventional Ventures. They’ll discuss what’s driving the need for business innovation and the role technology is playing in uncovering problems and creating solutions. This episode will lean heavily on how businesses can unlock new business models through data and analytics: specifically, how a service provider can also become a solutions Mike will share how he and his colleagues did just that. Theodora will round out the podcast by sharing her insights on how businesses in a wide variety of industries are putting data to work to drive innovation, including practical examples she’s encountered in her professional and personal life.

  2. LinkedIn Conversation: Mike and I will discuss how Endress+Hauser Digital Solutions identified unmet customer needs and were able to create an insights-on-demand solution to meet - even exceed - that need. We will hear about the practical, tactical side of the equation. We’ll hear about their innovation journey from inspiration, to incubation, through implementation. A remarkable story of transformation, both for the business and its customers.
