Last week, San Francisco was the lucky city to host Google Cloud Next ‘17... And I was even luckier to be there. This was the first event organized by Google, where you could meet other techies, attend keynotes, talk to experts and partners.

Google Next ’17 kicked off with breaking news of a co-innovation partnership between SAP and Google to deliver a new cloud choice.

The offer of SAP HANA on a partner cloud infrastructure under a “Bring Your Own License” offer is not new at all, we all know we can set up our HANA instances at Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure too. However, this is not the only integration that makes this partnership the first of its kind when looking at the other announcements that were made.

Based on the questions I got at SAP’s booth and for all of those who could not attend, I’m turning this blog into a quick FAQ.

What was announced?

  • SAP HANA is certified to run on Google Cloud Platform: This means you can now purchase your license at the SAP Software Download Center, download the installation binaries and get your SAP HANA instance running on Google Cloud Platform.

  • SAP HANA Express Edition available from the Google Launcher: SAP HANA Express Edition (HXE) is now some clicks away from executing in the Google Cloud Platform. The process to have it up and running is very quick and simple. Follow the tutorial that guides you through the steps in the Google Launcher and you will have the server-only version of HXE ready.

  • There is work in progress to bring SAP Cloud Platform on Google Cloud Platform: There are no timelines published on this yet,  but more announcements to come during SAPPHIRE 2017.

  • SAP is collaborating with GCP in bringing data custodian capabilities: Leveraging SAP's Governance Risk and Compliance capabilties, joint efforts are underway to provide access control and global visibility on Google Cloud Platform.

  • Integration of SAP products with the GSuite:  The best example of this is a C4C add-in for chrome allows you to bring customer information, leads and opportunities into your Gmail account. There are more details on this blog. Additionally, SAP Cloud Platform Identity and Access Management (IAM) is now integrated with Google Suite or GCP. This makes it easier to access the applications securely.

  • Super cool integration with Google Spreadsheets: Just kidding, this was not part of the announcement, just a demo that I built and documented here, but it works and you are free to borrow the code samples (and improve them into dynamic and more reusable code). craig.cmehil has also been building some pretty cool stuff on the App Engine to demonstrate how easy it is to integrate SAP and Google.

What is the biggest instance I can get in Google Cloud Platform (GCP)?

The offering is currently available for SAP HANA Platform Edition (version 1 SPS12 or version 2 SPS00), up to 208GB RAM.

What is the supported Operating System?

SUSE Linux.

What is the difference between the version in GCP Launcher vs the Ubuntu based version from a previous post?

If you are wondering what the difference is with the outcome of my previous blog post about installing HXE on GCP on Ubuntu, that last word is the key. SAP HANA in general is compiled to work on SUSE and RHEL, so the Virtual Machine in the launcher uses SUSE Linux as the operating system. This also results in an additional cost for the license of the operating system, which you will not have with Ubuntu though. Another difference is that, depending on the installation binaries you choose to download, the manual installation of HXE on Ubuntu could also include the XS Advanced tools form the beginning. This does not mean that you cannot install XSA in the Launcher version manually (I would recommend you add more RAM to the default VM).

What is the recommended configuration for the SAP HANA on GCP assuming 208GB RAM?

  • SUSE Linux is the supported operating system

  • Compute: n1-highmem-32 instance with 32 vCPUs and 208G DRAM with sole tenancy (1 SAP HANA Virtual Machine per host server) is supported for SAP HANA productive use.

  • Persistent disks: SAP recommends persistent disk SSD with at least 1.7TiB of storage space for optimal read/write throughput.

  • Network: SAP recommends subnet network for security.

  • Cloud storage (Optional): Recommended for SAP HANA backups for added durability and reliability.

  • Windows (Optional) instance for SAP HANA Studio.

You may also want to take regions into consideration.

Can you scale out?

No, scale-up deployment only as of today.

Can I deploy Netweaver applications, SAP S/4HANA or BW/4HANA in GCP?

Not for productive use and as of now. You can check the available scenarios for GCP here.

Is integration with the GSuite in the roadmap?

Integration with GSuite has been there for some time.  C4C with Gmail and Tripit with Google Calendar are just examples. Concur and Business Objects Lumira are also integrating with the GSuite.  Some design concepts and prototypes are currently being worked on.


These are certainly great news and there is definitely more to be announced at SAPPHIRE 2017. So, buckle up and stay tuned!
