The digital universe is expected to grow tenfold from 4.4 to 44 zettabytes by 2020.  Especially for the enterprise fleet-and mobility processes, the influence of the new digital universe will be a game changer. In order to stay ahead in future companies will urgently need to tackle the challenges of extracting value from a vast amount of information.

Companies will be able to harness the potential of Big Data around their fleet processes to innovate their mobility business, simplify their processes, attract young employees, by revising their view on enterprise fleets from a total cost of ownership (TCO) to a total cost of mobility (TCM) perspective.

At SAP we have observed a number of influencing technologies and business trends that are shaping on how future company mobility is provided. One of the major facts of digital economy has been the creation of the so-called second digital economy. This can be seen in the trend that for every physical object a digital image is mirrored. This representation of the physical world generates vast amount of data, which are automatically, invisible for the user transferred and updated into the IT world. This results in a high demand for digital processes and connections between the physical and digital word, for example in the industrial Internet, or industry 4.0 initiatives.

One trend forecasted is that by 2020 we will have more sensors attached to machines (50 billion) than humans living on planet earth (circa 9 billion). We are expecting the numbers of sensors in vehicles will increase exponentially, which will give opportunities to enhance the description of the vehicle in the digital world. The data will enable an improved description of an object e. g. a vehicle, as well as the environment it is in (temperature, humidity, utilization) and the user handling characteristics. The cross-linking of data enables predictive information for an enterprise fleet and results in improved driver safety, accelerated response to government regulations, avoid potential hazardous driving condition and prevent vehicle breakdown.

Governments globally invest in digital infrastructure development and the outcomes of these could be utilized for corporate fleet and mobility processes. For example the EU Commission’s Digital Agenda for Europe has 13 aims, among its growth for infrastructure.


Another key trend influencing  fleet and mobility management are major technology innovations, like e-mobility, Internet of things, connected world, especially connected car solutions and turning Big Data into meaningful information (by means of technology, e.g. In-Memory). Furthermore new technologies support visualization, simulation and digitalization.

New business models will have a big impact on corporate fleet and mobility processes. The sharing economy attracts mainly the generation Y, who does not want to own, but want to use products and services to fulfill their actual needs. This attitude is a good breeding ground for re-thinking of existing business models and processes and moving from a user-chooser corporate car model to a corporate car sharing model.
