SAP Advanced SQL Migration tool is a database conversion tool that can convert non-SAP databases data models to SAP databases including SAP HANA Cloud, SAP HANA and also other SAP databases like SAP ASE, SAP IQ and SAP SQL Anywhere. Showing all the capabilities of this tool in a demo is something difficult but here I am giving a try at least for the most important features.

This demo video illustrates how the same Java application works perfectly well against Oracle 11G and SAP HANA Cloud after extracting the data model from Oracle, converting it to SAP HANA Cloud with SAP Advanced SQL Migration tool and migrating the data using SAP HANA Smart Data Integration (SAP HANA SDI). The demo also shows how SAP HANA Smart Data Integration capabilities allows to you activate real time replication from Oracle on-prem to SAP HANA Cloud.

Some details about the application and data model:

  • The application is a 2-tier (client-server) Java application managing a publications database, including entities like authors, titles, publishers, orders... etc.
  • The data model consist of 8 tables, some sequences, synonyms and some SQL objects like stored procedures, functions and packages containing around 2100 lines of Oracle PL/SQL code in including exception handling, %ROWTYPEs, (REF)Cursors, FOR-loops, cursors, built-in functions calls, subqueries, transactions...etc.

This demo video is clearly showing:

  1. Some basic details about the Java application.
  2. SAP Advanced SQL Migration is used to extract data model and SQL objects from the Oracle on-prem database and to convert them to SAP HANA Cloud (SQLScript dialect).
  3. The converted code provided by the migration tool is executed against SAP HANA Cloud using shell scripts automatically generated.
  4. Data from Oracle on-prem tables is migrated to SAP HANA Cloud using SAP HANA Smart Data Integration.
  5. Real time data replication is activated for one of the tables in Oracle.
  6. The java client application is disconnected from Oracle and connected to SAP HANA with no changes at all, the application works in the same way as oracle.
  7. Real time data replication is shown inserting data into a table in the Oracle on-prem system.
