Topic Areas

There are 10 topic areas and you can expect about 8 questions for each topic.

In this blog, I will discuss the Database Migration to SAP HANA topic.

On the SAP Training website for C_HANATEC_13, the exam objective for this topic is stated:
Describe the DMO benefits, the DMO procedure steps,
the different migration options, the preparation steps for DMO
and the techniques to reduce downtime.

Study Material

The study material for this topic is the training

You can find a lot of material about this topic on the SAP Help Portal and the SAP Community Blogs, so if you cannot afford the cost or time of the classroom training this should not stop you from getting a least a couple of questions right.

Below some suggestions where to get started.

About DMO

The first unit in the training guide introduces DMO, its benefits, where to find information, and how it works technically. For this, see

Boris is the product manager for the Software Update Manager (SUM) and the Software Logistics Toolset. He has probably written more on the topic than anyone else.

Boris has also published a video about DMO

DMO Preparation and Execution

The second and third units in the training guide cover all the important aspects: DMO prerequisites, configuration, execution, monitoring, reset, and performance optimization (tuning downtime).

Unfortunately, there is no tutorial video about this topic yet on the SAP HANA Academy or the SAP Technology channels on YouTube but you can get a pretty good idea about this from the First Guidance guide for BW and a blog on DMO performance:

Each source references, in typical SAP fashion, many other SAP Notes and documents so it is very easy to get overwhelmed and no longer see the wood for the trees.

However, if you remain in browse mode and just use documents to familiarize yourself with the user interface and the different options, this will certainly help when faced with the more trickier questions.

Finally, of course, it is always a good idea to browse, scan, and read the relevant sections of the documentation. For this, see

Ideally, you might want to get your hands dirty and perform a DMO run on a test system. This does however requires you install SAP Netweaver so unless you are already familiar with this activity, this maybe a bridge to far.

To wrap-up, an interesting blog with many print screens using DMO on Azure:
