Experience from the sessions covering master data integration and master data management


Now that the first fully virtual SAP TechEd is over you can still benefit from the session replays. I'd like to quickly share my take-aways from the sessions which explicitly covered the topics of master data integration and master data management.

First of all I'd like to thank the session speakers for pulling off a great TechEd 2020 tech show and making the Integrated Intelligent Suite track a big success! Integration and the various aspects it entails was among the key topics and you showed the audience that it is for real: your sessions provided great insights into our software and the way ahead.

In particular, I'd like to stick to the sessions that I have listed in my recent blog post about SAP TechEd and let you know about some personal key findings. First of all, I'd like to point out that all sessions were very well attended with quite active attendands who were continuously asking questions in the chat. Most of them could be answered by the expert teams right away. So I'd just like to share some trends that I observed in the chat and provide links to additional information assets where available:

Taking Integration to the Next Level: Update on SAP’s Integration Strategy

Strategy talk providing insights into SAP’s suite qualities, holistic technology and business process integration across solutions, as well as third-party integrations.

Focus of incoming questions was on the coverage of end-to-end scenarios, the interplay between One Domain Model, Master Data Integration and SAP Graph, and related roadmap information. For more information, see:

One Domain Model and Master Data Integration

Lecture explaining strategy and means to get a consistent view of master data within the intelligent suite across end-to-end business scenarios such as lead to cash, recruit to retire, source to pay, and design to operate.

More than 800 registered people

Focus of incoming questions was on One Domain Model/Master Data Integration coverage, extensibility and examples and the relation to SAP Master Data Governance. For more information, see:

SAP Master Data Governance and Master Data Integration

Roadmap session explaining the difference between Master Data Integration and Master Data Management (through SAP Master Data Governance) and showing the way forward.

Focus of incoming questions was on MDG deployment options (hub vs. co-deployment) and about  which MDG version to use (move to MDG on S/4HANA or stay on ECC version). And, on details about MDG relation to One Domain Model/Master Data Integration (as outlined above). For more information, see:

Gain the Quality Your Business Deserves with SAP Master Data Governance

Breakout session about the data quality management capabilities in SAP Master Data Governance on S/4HANA to systematically detect, analyze, and remediate master data quality defects. Including data quality visualization in SAP Analytics Cloud.

More than 800 registered people

Focus of incoming questions was on the usage of SAP Information Steward vs. SAP MDG, machine learning used in MDG, and possibilities to expose data quality information in SAP Analytics Cloud. For more information, see:

  • Usage of SAP Information Steward vs. SAP MDG depends on the specific use case: MDG on S/4HANA provides a closed loop "define quality - monitor quality - ensure quality at entry - remediate data". Information Steward is powerful in profiling data (also beyond master data) or connecting to any data source

  • Usage of machine learning for rule mining in MDG on S/4HANA is described in this SAP Community blog post

  • Comprehensive information about MDG and SAC can be found in this SAP Community blog post

In a nutshell, it was interesting to see that there still seems to be some uncertainty around the complementary nature of one domain model/ master data integration on the one hand, and master data management on the other. Questions about this came in in all of these sessions.

Therefore again for clarification:

Master Data Integration is about distributing master data based on SAP One Domain Model for harmonized view across all applications. Companies expect broad domain coverage for end-to-end process integration.


Master Data Management is about ensuring high quality for trusted master data across the enterprise. Companies prioritize extra investment for pristine data quality for selected domains according to business needs.


Again, the number of attendants and their active participation revealed that integration in the Intelligent Enterprise Suite is an extremely relevant topic for our customers and it is on us to deliver. Stay tuned.
