SAP HANA—There’s a Cloud for That
SAP HANA offers a lot of flexibility in terms of delivering your choice of development language, deploying to cloud or on-premises (or a combination of both), choosing the cloud IaaS vendor you deploy to (with a single contract from SAP).
Another way we aim to provide the most flexibility to our customers is with different licensing models to deploy SAP HANA to the cloud.
SAP HANA perpetual licenses (SAP HANA, enterprise edition and SAP HANA, standard edition).
The same licensing that can be deployed on-premises via a TDI or appliance can be deployed into the cloud. Enterprise support is provided with your maintenance contract. Customers choosing this option benefit from predictable license costs and ultimate scalability. But they are also responsible for managing their SAP HANA system (e.g. applying patches and general DBA tasks).
SAP HANA, express edition
Again, this can be deployed in the cloud or installed locally to your own hardware. The hardware requirements are much lower than for SAP HANA, enterprise & standard editions, so it’s a fantastic way to get started easily. And the licensing costs are free! Yes! Even for productive use! SAP HANA, express edition is the perfect was for developers to get started with SAP HANA. But it is not intended for enterprise productive use (only community support is offered), and size-wise it maxes out at 32GB.
SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA service
This version is fully managed, scalable up to 2TB and your license fee include enterprise support. Like our perpetual licensing two editions are available: standard and enterprise editions. Enterprise edition has everything standard edition has plus advanced analytics (e.g. predictive, text analytics and spatial) and smart data integration. You can start as small as 32GB (so it’s a great place to pick-up once you’ve outgrown SAP HANA, express edition) and you can scale in 16GB increments. Subscription licensing and Cloud Platform Enterprise Agreements (i.e. pay for what you use) are available. Currently SAP HANA as a Service does not support NetWeaver based applications so it’s use cases target application development and application extensions.
SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud
A fully managed private instance of SAP HANA. It can scale to the same extent as on-premises SAP HANA. It is licensed by subscription and terms are 3-5 years. SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud can run all SAP application workloads and includes enterprise support as well as typically some services to provide its customers with a truly “white glove” experience.
All the editions of SAP HANA mentioned above offer the same functionality you know and love with our on-premises version—you can perform analytics in-memory on transactional data, SAP HANA supports SQL queries on multi-modal data (graph, spatial, text) and has advanced analytical capabilities (streaming, predictive analytics, etc.).
