In this series of blog posts, I would like to introduce the capabilities and related configurations of SAP Landscape Management Cloud. Each blog post will focus on a specific topic to explain the scenario and required configuration steps.

Solution in action

When measuring emissions, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol’s Corporate Standard divides over three types of emission, called “Scopes”. While Scope1 and Scope2, covering directly and indirectly generated emissions like power and heating, are straight forward to manage, Scope3 looking at purchased services and goods is where achieving transparency gets tricky. A big part of Scope3 which is still growing at over 38% in 2021 is Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Cloud Computing in general. So back to taking action as an SAP customer: How can you not just measure but actively reduce your energy consumption of SAP workloads on IaaS? With SAP Landscape Management Cloud, that’s how!

As part of SAP´s leading sustainability solutions for Zero Emissions, SAP Landscape Management Cloud helps you to analyze and lower your overall infrastructure energy consumption of SAP systems running on IaaS. With its system centric view on your SAP system landscapes you can easily analyze your current infrastructure energy savings.

So how does that work?

SAP Landscape Management Cloud allows you to define when your SAP systems should run  - and how many of its application server should be available. This definition is performed via so-called Availability Patterns. But let the product speak for itself:

Define, when your SAP systems should run with all or with a reduced number of application server as seen in Figure 1:

Our availability pattern will start our SAP systems Monday to Friday at 07:00 am and stop predefined application servers at 5 pm. SAP Landscape Management Cloud will trigger a graceful stop of the remaining instances and virtual machines at 7pm.

When applying the created availability pattern to your SAP systems, SAP Landscape Management Cloud will provide you a forecast of the saved costs and the saved energy in kWh in this specific case we will save ~7.7K € per month as well as 854.9 kWh.

Our dashboard will indicate how much energy you are currently saving and calculates how often you could go around our pale blue dot with an average electric car. As of today, you would have been able to ride along the Equator for 1.63 round trips!

Summary:

To sum up, SAP Landscape Management Cloud provides you with all the necessary capabilities to visualize and actively optimize your energy consumption and to reduce your compute-related carbon emissions.
