SAP have two In Memory database offerings; Sybase ASE – with In Memory Database Option and SAP HANA. Although both labelled ‘In Memory’ technologies these two database products are very differently implemented and offer solutions to very different challenges. ASE IMDB  facilitates delivery of very high performance OLTP solutions, where as SAP HANA delivers high performance business intelligence mixed with OLTP. Each product uses ‘In Memory’ technology to solve different challenges.

SAP have highlighted a target for a fully integrated data environment with their ‘Real Time Data Platform’, utilizing ASE,IQ,HANA and RS.   These products can be integrated together now; with each product utilized to leverage it’s particular performance hotspot.  This of course results is separate data  ‘silos’. SAP’s target for the ‘Real Time Data Platform’, will all products ‘merged’ may allow the selection of the database engine which delivers the performance required for a particular facet of an application’s landscape.

In the meantime, utilising Sybase ASE, with IMDB where applicable, will yield extreme OLTP performance. HANA can be utilized to deliver the highest level of OLAP performance, with integration via replication or other data transformation services.

Some Key Differentiators  :-

Sybase ASE – With In Memory Database Option :-

  • Operates as a true memory only resident solution
  • Row store structure combined within memory database facilitates very high OLTP processing
  • Very simple migration path for  - no code changes required to realize performance gains of in memory processing
  • Mature product

  • Write operations are logged – fully ACID compliant
  • Column store structure facilitates
