This was a SAP webcast given last week in the APJ region.  I watched the recording and below are my notes, including a preview of the upcoming BW data acquisition release.  SAP's Olivier Duvelleroy and Jonathan Wetton were featured on this webcast

The word data discovery is not new

Empower end users across the organization and to serve themselves without knowing the infrastructure

Data discovery is a key use case

Agile as a concept is about fast iteration and small steps to take forward – this is how SAP is bringing Lumira to the market every 4-6 weeks

Combine stories with experience; SAP gives an example from SAP Sports sponsorship team

Figure 2: Source: SAP

SAP says to use SAP Lumira for the following reasons:

Turn data insights to action

Trust the data using the BI Platform

Turn perception of data into a collaborative process

Figure 3 shows the details of the Visualize tab

It can propose visualizations

Charts are in the chart picker; extensions are available and extended with an open source repository

After building them, assemble the charts in the Compose room and can build infographics

Figure 4 is a “Marketecture” slide containing several components

Lumira Desktop is meant for the analyst; once the analyst builds content they can share to Lumira Cloud (no IT)

When share to Lumira Cloud they can come with any web browser to connect or the SAP Mobile BI application

Not all customers are ready to adopt the cloud so there is a version of Lumira Server that uses HANA, released one year ago

In January the Lumira Team Server option is available if you don’t have HANA

Figure 5: Source: SAP

Lumira for teams can be installed without IT and can install in 15 minutes; it does not require SAP HANA.

SAP is about to release Lumira Server for BI Platform at the end of the month – it is an add-on service for the BI platform – it will appear in the Management

Console.  It uses the platform authorizations and you can cluster that server.  It does not require SAP HANA either.

Lumira Server for SAP HANA is another option to deploy on the HANA platform and good for customers who are switching to SAP HANA

Figure 6: Source: SAP

The SAP Lumira Server for BI Platform gets released at the end of the month

You see Lumira Server in your Management Console

Figure 7: Source: SAP

Figure 7 shows you can edit the Lumira Documents from the BI Platform

These documents have been shared and you can see them in the BI Launchpad

If you have been authorized you can edit the document, add comments, change, and create a new visual on the document

One item is not exposed is the ability to Prepare the data

Figure 8: Source: SAP

Figure 8 is a slide showing the deployment options

Desktop for analyst, small teams to use Lumira teams, Lumira Server for BI Platform to integrate with existing BI platform (one infrastructure / one platform – enterprise BI + self service BI)

Figure 9: Source: SAP

Lumira 1.23 has a new in-memory data engine which is lighter and faster

Lumira 1.25 has a new query panel on the universe, exception highlighting

Lumira 1.26 will have data wrangling with Hadoop – access a sample of data; will include the ability to include visualizations from multiple datasets

Figure 10: Source: SAP

Will support BW authorizations, hierarchies, key figures, exception aggregation

You can get a free version to access your personal files

To access other data sources, you can check out a trial

To share you store on the Lumira Cloud; free up to 1 GB

Then you can review the different levels of servers

If you are implementing Fiori with HANA there is integration with Lumira and Fiori Launchpad

Question & Answer

Q: What recommendation do you have for combining the desktop and server capabilities of Lumira?

A: Use desktop for your own experimentation; the server is to share with a large number of users

Once server is in place, users may not have to use the desktop

Q: Licensing for Lumira Server, particularly if you are licensed for BI Platform / Edge

A: Lumira server for BI Platform is part of the BI Suite

If you are a BI Edge, you may have to purchase Lumira Edge

Q: What are the main differences between Design Studio and Lumira?

A: Design Studio is optimized for online access; optimized for developers in IT department

Lumira is an agile visual exploration tool for analysts

Want to make 2 products operate so analyst will build most of BI content and once they share, developers in IT to open Lumira document and customize it further and redeploy to larger audience

Design Studio 1.5 you start to have small features of Lumira

Both tools use the same extension mechanism

Q: Can you use Lumira for other unstructured data sources?

A: Twitter feed; want to work with Hadoop data better including images, videos

Q: How will BW data be published?  Can the end user refresh the document with newly loaded BW data?

A: Yes; release in June build with BW in acquisition mode; when publish to Lumira Server – won’t have full refresh in June but may come in August

Q: Are there plans for better map visualizations rather than to use third party?

A: Yes; today have basic Navtec maps and introduced ESRI

Hope to announce soon to get the ESRI base maps  without having to pay for ESRI

If you are an existing ESRI customer you can access your own custom maps in ArcGIS server

There are some free extensions on GitHub that integrate with Google Mpas

Q: Does Lumira provide any data cleansing functionality?

A: You can replace values; limited; working with EIM team to provide data quality features in the 6 months + timeframe
