SAP CodeJam 2019 – Lexington – ABAP for SAP HANA Fundamentals

On June 20, the University of Kentucky Information Technology Services had the privilege of hosting an SAP CodeJam on ABAP for SAP HANA Fundamentals.   We had 35 attendees on hand who were eager to learn more about the newest features available in ABAP and HANA.  While most of the attendees were developers who have worked with ABAP for many years, managers and developers specializing in analytic also joined us.  For those new to ABAP, they were given the opportunity to spend time learning ABAP Developer Tools in Eclipse and eventually join the ABAP developers working with the more advanced topics including Core Data Services (CDS), Advanced OpenSQL, and ABAP Managed Database Procedures (AMDP).  We wrapped up the day by creating a new Fiori application using all the new techniques we learned.



Our SAP expert for the day was Ingo Bräuninger, who traveled all the way from Germany to educate us.  Ingo spent around an hour and a half introducing us to what a CodeJam is and going through slides explaining the different ABAP and HANA concepts that would be covered throughout the day.  At the end of the presentation, he helped the attendees log into the S/4HANA system created for the event and quickly went over the 191 page document containing many exercises.  Each person was encouraged to select the exercises he or she was most interested in trying.

We were then ready to enjoy the lunch buffet and spend a little time networking.



After lunch, the group worked on the exercises.  Ingo was very enthusiastic, willing to share what he knows, and answer our many question.  With Ingo’s help, the group was able to make connections and realize the potential that these new tools have to offer.



The day was a great success.  Everyone in attendance learned something new and made new connections.
