When SAP Leonardo was released in February of 2017, the IoT was not yet the primary business driver it is today, more than a year later. Because of the widespread use of IoT devices in enterprise-level Big Data projects, Leonardo has found itself a valuable addition to many business' data gathering strategy. With the newest addition to SAP Leonardo, companies can look forward to utilizing their Microsoft Azure installs alongside their SAP Leonardo processes making for a more streamlined system for the collection and cataloging of data.

Intelligent Enterprise through the IoT

IoT has been such a dominant, disruptive technology because of the potential it offers to business, not just from a marketing perspective, but from the direction of inventory management, delivery tracking and any number of different areas where IoT devices can be used to generate up-to-the-minute data. The IoT provides a chance for businesses to increase their productivity (and by extension their profitability) as well as redefine the experiences their customers have with the industry. IoT data can even be used to develop and implement entirely new business models based on what insight the data collected provides to the company.

Data-Driven Upgrades

Data collection through the IoT enables business to revamp and grow based on the data they receive. That data-driven growth can lead to a higher level of profitability by determining where weaknesses exist within the business model. Leonardo facilities this process by allowing for three distinct methods of enabling innovation, viz.:

  • Using IoT data to combine it with the data from business operations to develop innovative solutions and push adoption across client subscribers, allowing these customers to innovate from their platforms

  • Adding extensibility to existing SAP installations through more responsive IoT interactions

  • Utilizing SAP Leonardo to create new and fresh uses for IoT devices that can be integrated into many different spheres of business and industry

Azure and Leonardo Combined

Most IoT designers, if not all of them, are well familiar with the Microsoft Azure platform and its use in designing cloud-based solutions. Thanks to the integration of this newest release of Leonardo, designers can now seamlessly interact with telemetry data collected through Microsoft Azure's backend. The aim in including this level of integration is to encourage customers to use Azure's IoT Edge runtime to aid in innovation for their own business practices. Edge computing combined with IoT development services means a faster, more reliable network of devices as well as increased bandwidth for individual devices. The speed with which this data makes it to the company is sometimes of paramount importance, and the addition of Edge computing speeds up the collection of this data significantly.

The Future of Business Processing

IoT provides a unique opportunity for businesses to look at new and advanced ways of integrating cutting-edge technologies to drive their processes. Wider adoption of IoT means that having a robust framework to deal with these devices is no longer an option for a connected business. Azure provides an easy-to-use interface for IoT devices as well as a standard methodology to interface with when that data needs to be used for processing and garnering insights. The bonus of the Edge computing component in Azure is a useful addition since it can allow for better network coverage and less dropped data to for connectivity. SAP Leonardo can then utilize Azure to collect, register, and sort that data from individual IoT's in a fashion that doesn't require much human interaction. The result is a much faster data processing pipeline and an ability to visualize the flow and insights of data in an almost real-time efficiency.
