Here I am submitting my entry for Data Geek Challenge III - Thrones of Data in House of Healers category. In 2014, world has faced unknown disease outbreak in many countries specifically in Western Africa. My entry is not only to analyze the statistical data but also to show how this disease has expanded drastically with number of death cases. Ebola is quite lethal but not particularly contagious, so it presumably wouldn’t cause an epidemic in countries with modern health systems. This entire tragedy is a failure of humanity. Through this entry I just want to put my efforts to let inform others about Ebola and the situation of the suspected countries so that we can help them to get out of this.
Ebola viruses are found in several African countries. Ebola was first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since then, outbreaks have appeared sporadically in Africa. The natural reservoir host of Ebola virus remains unknown. However, on the basis of evidence and the nature of similar viruses, researchers believe that the virus is animal-borne and that bats are the most likely reservoir. Four of the five virus strains occur in an animal host native to Africa.
My Fact sheet
The statistical data have been collected from many websites and other resource, but I thank to healthmap.org from which I got more collective information. I acquired this Excel based data sheet to SAP Lumira.
In SAP Lumira preparation phase, I performed some data actions to make data quality for analysis. Then I designed many visualizations and a story. Here I am listing my visualizations by storyboard with description.
Viz 1 provides general information about Ebola virus.
Viz 2 provides the suspected countries with the no. of suspected cases. A geo choropleth chart represents the no. of suspected cases by country. From this chart we can identify the Ebola affected countries, Liberia is having the highest suspected cases with number 3022.
Viz 3 provides the countries with the no. of death cases. A geo choropleth chart represents the no. of death cases by country. From this chart we can identify the countries with death cases like Guine, Liberia, Nigeria, DR Congo etc, Liberia is having the highest death cases with number 1578.
Viz 4 is a broader view of the affected region. Based on the chart we can identify that West Africa is the most affected region with more suspected cases, Ebola may expand to Central Africa to South Africa as there are many suspected cases in DR Congo, it may expand to North Africa as there are many suspected cases in Mali.
This regional analysis provides the statistical information of the suspected region, Viz 4 provides the geo graphical suspected cases analysis while Viz 5 provides statistical data. A pie chart shows that approx 97% of Ebola affected region is from West Africa.
A Scatter plot charts represents Suspected Vs Death case by country. Every single bubble represents country wise Suspected cases and death cases.
Ebola Outbreak by Month - A line chart represents how drastically Ebola has spread with the no. of suspected cases from February-2014 to September-2014 (still continue). These are the no. of suspected cases, you can see in chart that the disease has drastically spread by month on month.
Monthly Regional Analysis - Suspected Cases, represents the disease outbreak by month, with no. of suspected cases by country. From graph we can identify that the origin of disease is from Guine and Liberia is the most suspected country with Ebola disease. The Viz 7 graphs represents Ebola expansion by month on month while this graph represents Ebola expansion by month on month with country.
Monthly Regional Analysis - Death Cases, represents the disease outbreak by month, with no. of death cases by country. From graph we can identify that Liberia is having the highest no. of death cases.
Viz 7 represents the Ebola outbreak by month with suspected cases, while this graph represents the outbreak by month and quarter with death cases. From the graph we can identify that the most death cases were happened during the third quarter.
Viz 11 is a snapshot of Ebola outbreak with country wise suspected and death cases. From the Viz 8 we have identified the origin of the Ebola disease i.e. Guine but the most affected country is Liberia which is neighboring country of it.
