Dear All,

I thank SAP for giving an opportunity to participate in DataGeek III challenge. I have been using SAP Lumira for the past 5 months and my experience with this tool is amazing. It is perfect fit for Self-Service BI and Data Exploration. The best feature which I like is enabling d3/custom extensions in Lumira and I spent most of the time there.

Well, I accepted the Data Geek III Challenge to tell a story about “Road Accidents in India during years 2003-2011” using SAP Lumira Desktop.

A story board is created to show the analysis and trends about accidents for the state and year in India.

I have created a new extension Hierarchical Bar Chart which is used in one of the page in this story board to easy drill-down to next levels. Good thing about this extension is it has navigation path displayed on the top of the chart so that we can jump around into various levels.

DATASET AND DETAILS

Collected data from http://data.gov.in/keywords/indian-road-accident-data and also enriched in way it can be used for analysis

Dimensions:

Region

Name of the region

State

Name of the state

Year

Year in which the accident took place

Measures:

#Accidents

Total no. of accidents

#People Injured

Total no. of people were injured

#People Killed

Total no. of people were killed

Dataset - 01

Dataset – 02

Here is the analysis and story board:

Page 1:

A summary page gives the summary details about total accidents and no. of people injured and no. of people died. It also provides the information about Top 3 States and Years more no. accidents recorded.

Page 2:

This page shows the Bottom 3 states based on the no. of deaths and also yearly death rates.

Page 3:

This Page gives the detail analysis of total accidents, people injured and died in geographical charts. Input controls are used in the page to filter the data by state and year.

Page 4:

This page has Hierarchical Bar Chart extension which I developed to navigate to various levels. It has a navigational ribbons on the top of the chart can be used to jump easily to various levels within in the same chart.

When I click on South India bar element it will drill to South India region as shown below:

If I want to go back to home to select different region, I just need to click on the navigation ribbons on the top as shown below.

Below diagram shows I have navigated to <Home>

Here below I could switch back to another region Western India easily.

  • Life don’t have Reset button.

Please have a look at this video which has live actions of this story and extensions.

Story Highlights:

At the end of this story analysis, I could arrive at below conclusions:

  • Top 3 states which have more no deaths are “Andhra Pradesh, Utter Pradesh and Tamil Nadu" which means in region Southern India has more deaths by  accidents.
  • Death rate per year is growing at around 1.5% per year
  • Bottom 3 states based no. of accidents are "Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Daman & Diu" which means that Islands has less deaths by accidents

I hope you like this post. All the best for other participants!!!
