Creating a Mass import on SAP MDG Cloud

Introduction

This blog series is my learning journey on how to set up a business partner demo scenario on SAP BTP MDG trial account.  I come from an on-premise SAP background with MDG Experience but very new to BTP MDG cloud and I hope this blog will help many consultants who are transitioning from an on-premise background to cloud.

Background

New terms are always confusing until get your hands dirty. Finding a way to practice and further understand the systems has always came across to me as more of a blocker than it should.

In an on-premise environment, SAP BASIS will set up a sandbox who will activate a license and create users with right type of roles in a client data centre. We can also set this up on Azure or AWS data centre but still SAP MDG in this type of set up is not set up as software as a service.

Now this is changing. Having been using the SAP BTP cockpit for a while now, for some UI5 training and Cloud platform integration (there is a whole host of things you can do on the trial). Most recently I have discovered the SAP MDG Cloud trial. This is fantastic tool for clients with a cloud footprint or cloud roadmap. SAP BTP MDG is a software as a service offering and innovations are released every quarter unlike SAP MDG on-premise software.

SAP MDG implementations often fail if the organization is not set up right due to the cost involved and the long time to implement MDG and derive value.

As organizations are moving from on-premise to cloud, customers are looking to implement pilot MDG projects that integrates into the cloud and on-premise systems within short time scales and costs to test the designs work. SAP BTP MDG cloud provides customers ability to quick scale and pilot SAP MDG projects within short time scales and lesser costs.

SAP BTP MDG Cloud may not have all the features that are available to the on-premise software, but it has basic features to pilot and implement projects. Innovations are released every quarter, enabling customers to leverage new features and build upon it. Please check various MDG deployment options and SAP MDG Strategy.

Where to start – Step 1.

So, first things first. You need an S-ID and you need to sign up for a trial on the SAP Business Technology Platform.

Once you have done this you will see the following when you first enter.

Go into your trial instance using the below link to then set up your MDG trial

Once you are in and on the trial you will be approve the trial license and jump into the fiori screen for SAP MDG Cloud. Please note, the MDG Cloud trial only gives you Business Partner, 6 Data Quality Management rules and consolidation abilities.

 

Great – we are in the MDG trial system now what I hear you asking. Well this small world is your oyster. You can check out the already included Business partners made within the trial system, using the Manage business partner tile.

What I will be walking through with you next is the Manage Import and Consolidation process.

 

Create your Mass Import – Step 2

Clicking on the Manage Imports tile will take you through to the below screen, currently this will be empty – so go ahead and hit Create in the top right corner.

Now we are creating a new import, But wait, we don’t have a file to upload…… Not a problem SAP MDG provides you with some file templates to download. You can download the full template or some example files. In this case I downloaded the Example files, and used the BT_ORG_COMPLEX.XLSX file.

You can just use the file as is, I wanted to add some of my own information, if you’d like to do the same I would recommend just copying the fields already completed in the example and doctoring them to suite your needs.

Complete the tables – BUT000. BUT100, ADRC, BUT021_FS, ADR2, ADR3, ADR6.

Once uploaded, click Save in the bottom right hand corner and this will start to run the import process. If successful, you will see the below screen.

If you have an error, instead of Success you will see the Red error marker. You can go into this and it will explain what the issue is with your template.

With this success, you data is successfully loaded onto the MDG Trial cloud ready for consolidation.
