ME21N: Error "Enter cost center" when using Account Assignment Category A

Dear gurus,

we would like to use Account Assignment Category A Asset in a PO.

In that Category field Cost Center is NOT set as mandatory in customizing.

Still, when I enter an asset number and press return, I get an error:

Enter Cost Center
Message No. ME083

Even more confusing: When I maintain a valid cost center number in field Cost Center, the error still is displayed.

Any ideas?
