What is SAP Business Network Global Track and Trace?
SAP Business Network Global Track and Trace is SAP's solution to provide real-time transportation, logistics, and process visibility. While highly configurable for tracking any process, the solution is primarily used for tracking visibility into inbound or outbound shipments through a network of connected carriers and logistics services providers.
Shipments are tracked at the lowest tracking-unit level of detail, such as parcel, truck, or container, across multiple modes of transportation, such as LTL, FTL, ocean, air or rail. Shipment tracking rolls-up to the tracking of the corresponding highest-level of business document, such as the Purchase Order, Sales Order or Stock Transfer Order. Therefore, shipment progress and delay impact can be assessed in the context of the business process, to support inventory and production planning or customer service and delivery promise dates. Shipment and process events, location updates, estimated times of arrival (ETA), and impact assessments are available from within the solution and fed back into ERP and Transportation Management systems to inform related ERP and transportation management processes. Planned and actual geolocation and route data are ingested directly from carriers and freight forwarders though multiple formats such as API and EDI, or through interoperability with third party transportation data aggregators such as project44, Shippeo, Four Kites, and Transporeon.
The solution is a single platform for multiple standard and custom tracking scenarios that harmonizes data from multiple disparate sources. Buyers, manufacturers, and shippers can employ standard business and shipment tracking processes, or change and configure their own custom processes, statuses, event types, or data fields to track. Examples of alternative tracking scenarios include the tracking of sub-component picking across a multi-warehouse kanban-like manufacturing process or consumption of scope 3 carbon emissions data from a logistics services provider.
Furthermore, highly configurable alerts and notifications are delivered through multiple channels for “event-to-action” proactive management, delivered to stakeholders within or external to the solution owner's own organization, with links back the source tracking application and information. Consuming ETA information combined with proactive alerts and notifications for in transit shipments enable solution owners to be predictive in avoiding or mitigating impact from supply chain disruption.
