Today we were lucky enough to find seat in two of the very popular Hana Development Hand-on Sessions.
A Recommendation for those going to TechEd Europe, if you sign up to a hand-on sessions, be early, do not be even a minute late. And if you are late and forced to join the waiting-list; do not be an "arse" to the nice ladies at the door.
The rest of the day we spend in the Road Map and Q&A Lounges slamming the presenters with questions.
Since Hana SP7 (on-premise or on-cloud), Geo-spatial objects and analytics are available in Hana. Most of the capability and on-database calculation has been ported from Sybase IQ solution for Geo-spatial data. Therefore, it is a very robust tool-set for storing, building, modeling and calculation over geo-spatial entities.
The database modeling is compatible with open standard such as ESRI. The first part of the session illustrated multiple ways to import Geo-data into HANA, from ESRI models, from CSV files with transformation on the Database engine, and from other binary tables in separate db engines. The exercise was shown all the functionality is executed as SQL script, without the need for other ETL or middle-ware tools. However in an Enterprise Landscape, solution as DATA services, Hana Connector, and Cloud Integration will be the preferred methodology.
After importing multiple dimensions of data we use the Geo-engine to produce queries and calculation around point, polygon, cluster and buffer analytics.
To conclude with a HANA XS engine, consuming the data and rendering using open-standard GIS libraries included in Hana.
The result was a very pleasant eye-candy application; for those who have worked with Geo-Data it is very impressive to have all the functionality to produce Geo-rich application in the same application framework.
One of the most popular hands-on so far. Form talking to several attendant, it was identified that group was a mixture of BW/BI proffesionals and Hana developers. A shared inquiry among the BI professional, is how does Hana modeling fits with BI/BW modeling?
In my impression, the tools and semantics are very similar, between the two disciplines.
During this we build a complex data model composed of:
It was a very pleasant experience to see how intuitive the modeling tools in Hana Studio are, how easy one can build and aggregate, cubes, dimensions, calculations, and preview/debug at the same time in graphical, table or analytic mode.
It has been a couple of year that I have not touched a SAP Portal system to produce web-content. I was captivated by a presentation in on the Lounges, on how to create very quickly, good looking (really good looking  ) sites, running on Hana. The presentation included, the creating of widgets via wizards; rendering real-time data from back-end SAP systems, exposed by SAP Gateway.
Besides how easy and fast it was to expose backend data, I was impressed by the look and functionality of the content editing from end.
If you have used or seen the created of websites with web businesses as WIX or FOURSQUARE, you will be happily surprised the new content management approach follows the same easy, drag-and-drop paradigm. Complemented with the enterprise tools, the XS engine and data analytics of Hana, it opens a very wide set of of opportunities.
The portal solutions is part of the Hana license or modules are required.
Another Q&A session that caught my attention was about the latest improvements in Solution Manager for agile application life-cycle management.
SAP value propositions, is that customer can perform two core releases each year in landscapes where Solution Manager is used to manage:
For several years SAP has been producing rich details white-papers, methodology and documentation to achieve an effective TCO over IT landscapes.
The discussion topics have not changed much in the last years, but the screen shoots and slide do look nicer..
Pretzels, bratwurst, wine and beer.
