Columnar in-memory databases provide the performance to combine both transactional and analytical processing into one system. This performance also introduces the potential for vast system simplifications like redundancy-free schemata, which eliminate the need to maintain prebuilt aggregates and increase flexibility significantly. In this session, we demonstrate and discuss fundamental technical concepts of in-memory databases as well as their impact for future and present enterprise solutions.

The speaker, Jan Kossmann, is a research assistant at the chair of Prof. Hasso Plattner at the Hasso Plattner Institute, Germany. In the research area “In-Memory Data Management for Enterprise Systems“, Jan and his colleagues conduct research projects with the goal of improving main memory databases even further for both transactional and analytical queries in a single system. Enterprise databases for mixed workloads enable interactive analytics on transactional data.
