Paul's abstract, "The Future of ABAP Programming", says the following:
Paul will lead this session on Hanson’s ABAP journey and the company’s future plans. He will discuss the two seismic changes going on in the world of ABAP: abapGit for version control and the RESTful ABAP Programming Model. He’ll also share direct insights from personal experiences. Be ready to ask your questions and learn what the future of ABAP holds!
I asked Paul more about his session and he answered as follows:
1. Tell me about your session
I am going to be talking about the future of ABAP programming. Some programmers are concerned there is no future for ABAP, but nothing could be farther from the truth. In reality there are a combination of seismic changes underway. It took 20 years between microwaves being invented and them catching on, but once they did, they were everywhere. It is going to be the same deal with test driven development, ABAP in the Cloud, the so called Embedded Steampunk concept, the Restful ABAP Programming Model and ABAPGit. I am going to explain what these all are but more importantly how they all fit seamlessly together. To use a “Dungeons and Dragons” analogy they are all sides of the same dice.
2. Why attend your session?
It is so easy to stay in your comfort zone and just keep doing what you have been doing for the last 20 years, programming wise. However, it might be an idea to see what radical changes are barreling down the mountain towards you just so you do not get total taken by surprise when the avalanche of changes to your day-to-day programming work arrives.
3. What you are looking forward to
I was horrified when the USA TechEd was cancelled and overjoyed when ASUG came up with a replacement event, I have looked over the agenda in detail and it is wonderful. Lots of customer stories (always better than sales pitches) and many hands-on workshops where you get to use the new technology rather than just being told it is wonderful. If I had to pick one it would be the “event mesh” which is the latest iteration of SAP middleware technology.
4. What is your favorite hobby?
It would be easy to say drinking, but in fact it is “Toastmasters International” an organisation dedicated to improving peoples public speaking abilities. This is an amazing organization, public speaking turns out to be just as much a science as it is an art, and I encourage anyone who gives any sort of public presentation to check this out.
