DB Systel GmbH HQ - Frankfurt

This year’s event marks the first in-person meeting the community had since the Pandemic.

Quick Summary of what transpired during the event:

Day 1

With opening remarks from Andreas Jopp (Chair of the user group, and IT Board Member at Swiss Railways), the stage was set.

Our keynote speaker, Nicole Göbel, shared DB Systel’s strategic approach to managing a team in such times as hybrid work environments with key learning in how to organize for success. Very insightful presentation!

She was later joined on stage by fellow executives from Amtrak, Swiss and Kazakhstan Railways in a panel discussion moderated by Rob Roemers from Brussel Transport (STIB-MIVB), were they discussed each company’s approaches in the post-COVID era.

NTT Data, our sponsor (a great many thanks!) for the day followed with industry insights in the areas of 5G, and overall, in their practice supporting the travel and transportation industries.

Day 2

Day two was structured into 4 themes – each theme with speakers from different rail and mobility practitioners providing insights on how they approached the areas. In each of the themes, 3 examples were presented, and a panel was hosted on stage with the speakers.

The 4 themes were:

  • Railways going to Cloud: the presenters shared their strategy and how they want to go about transitioning to cloud-based computing for their enterprise IT environments. A survey was also done on-site to give a quick insight on where each participant’s company is in their cloud journey vis-à-vis their SAP landscapes.

  • People matters: HXM portfolios were discussed, including example roadmaps that operators shared on their HCM journey. A change management aspect was also raised from the business side and the challenges and opportunities when executing these changes.

  • Processes and Applications: process and data flows, especially in the Asset Management Applications space of railways were presented and discussed. Topics touched included: data flows between core S/4 and cloud IAM solutions, BIM, and process mining with respect to asset management applications.

  • Data driven business: the insights to be generated from the various data sets available, be it from SAP transactional systems or others were discussed. Topics touched were data orchestration with SAP DI and Data Quality when it comes to the reliability of what the outcomes will be. A use case in network planning on BW/4HANA was also shared.

Later in the day, there were break-out sessions (deep-dive sessions), were like-minded folks got together to discuss their top-of-mind topic. The two that were heavily attended were in the areas of S/4HANA and Intelligent Asset Management. There were also two topics of interest in the areas of Sustainability and Billing and Revenue Innovation Management (BRIM), where a small cohort of people huddled to discuss the latest in the space and do follow-ups with their respective organizations.

A big thanks goes to RIZING and Orianda, our sponsors for day 2, who have extensive experience in implementing SAP’s Intelligent Asset Management Portfolio in a variety of rail and mobility transport.
