Even before the Covid-19 pandemic created economic contraction and oil price freefall throughout the globe, the energy industry’s transition to a more diverse, lower-carbon mix of products and services was going to be a sometimes painful process.
Innovative Portuguese oil and gas company, Galp, has over $12B in revenue and 6,000 employees across 11 countries, Galp specializes in upstream, refining & midstream, commercial with 1,459 retail service stations, renewables, gas distribution, electric & gas utility and new businesses yet to come. They have been an SAP customer for over 20 years, and they were in the middle of an SAP S/4HANA go-live when the crisis hit.
Benjamin Beberness, global head of the oil and gas business unit at SAP, had a chance to sit down with Catarina Ceitil, the shERPa Project Director at Galp, to discuss her SAP S/4HANA project (including IS-Oil and IS-Retail), and the future of Galp.
During the interview, Ms. Ceitil explained that they named their project, “shERPa”, after the elite mountaineers in Nepal who helped early explorers get to the top of Mt. Everest, with a play on letter case to highlight, “ERP”. She went on to explain Galp’s climb to strategic digital transformation and process optimization.
“The world is changing so much, and so is Galp,” Ms. Ceitil continues. “We are now aiming to bet on solar, on digitalization, and on being a much more customer-centric company. Our CEO says that he wants to be the Amazon of energy.”
