All right, maybe a bookmarklet would be a great idea, but the feature has been disabled

So... hide or delete that section from Bookmarks section!

A screenshot:

Or maybe the bookmarklet button isn't working for me?

Yep.  It looks like the service has been disabled.  I was able to install the bookmarklet but when I attempt to bookmark a webpage, a message states that the service has been disabled.

Thanks for pointing this out.  I will investigate this.

Scott,

It is now November.  Any progress?  Any schedule for implementation?

This could be a very handy functionality; if it would only work.

I believe the challenge is that bookmarks for external content have been disabled: these can be abused to post spam in the community (e.g. links to external sites with spam content unrelated to SCN).

Jason,

Tks for the info, but it doesn't really seem to answer the question about progress.

Assuming that the determination has actually been made that this service is unworkable, don't you think it would be wiser to hide/remove the button from the application?  Or, perhaps limit the links to URLs controlled by SAP (e.g. help.sap.com, which happens to be the only non-SCN bookmark capability that interests me)

I agree. Lets wait to hear from about this feature: enabling linking to a limited set of domain is a good suggestion.

Hi,

Sorry for not following up sooner.  Unfortunately, we are not able to activate this service at this time, and I agree with DB49 that this option should just be hidden from the UI until such a time when it can be activated.  I will make this request to our IT folks.

Why can't we activate it?  There are two main issues:

  1. Security.  This bookmarklet service communicates with SCN via an API call.  While this is probably safe for internal employee only communities, externally we cannot expose such system access without proper API governance and controls in place.  There is an initiative to launch a developer program which exposes the system APIs to community members so they may build their own community applications, but this will not be ready until next year.
  2. SPAM.  As Jason already pointed out, bookmarks if activated would be another channel for spam, and our current moderation capabilities cannot address this.

Regards,

Scott
