Hi All,

I want to know how Waste management can help in tracking greenhouse gas emission.

Is there any way to classify the waste and get the amount of green house gas present.

Hi,

There is no direct linkage of Waste management component with GHG calculations, However as jayakumar mensioned you can develop your own programs to corelate waste to GHG emissions (As you require to work out lot of empherical equations to arrive in giving inputs required to process such GHG calculations and most importantly lot of Development efforts are required to get the resultant solution, more or less it will work as Calculator to corelate GHG emissions). I suggest go with SAP EC suite which is designed exclusively for Regulatory complaiance and for periodic regulatory Reports. Need furtehr information, write to me so as to forward you the relevant information

Hi,

Any organization's if desires to establish "carbon footprint" is mostly by its energy usage. The energy is produced from burning of both conventional and non-conventional fuels and burning of fuels directly produces greenhouse gases and also indirectly contibutes from non-point sources. More the energy usage, the higher the production of greenhouse gases. However, because they are related, you can track one by tracking the other. By tracking your energy usage for disposal of waste in the part of waste management, you can track your greenhouse gas emissions for specific waste disposal options.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Tracking and Reporting is essential to:

developing baseline for GHG

standardisation of GHG emissions and emission reductions from facility to facility and department to department

creating visibility to the organization's carbon reduction initiatives

Identify specific cintributos of GHG and topper in terms of volume

Track the impact of credits obtained via direct purchase and use of "green" supply contracts

Determine if the organization qualifies for the sale of credits

Based on the disposal option one opts for specific type of waste, the level of emissions can be established by trail n error method or from the standard softwares in the market that are very much in practice. for e.g. if a specific waste that was generated in a industry is fit to reuse/ recyle in another ancillary unit, in such case the greenhouse emissions are very low and little from volume of fuel consuming for transportation and other handling. Another waste that cannot be recyled, the option left are lanfill and incineration depends on the local regulations. If the waste shall be incinerated, again the same contibutes for huge amount of greenhouse emissions. So under the part of wate management, the risk of grenhouse emissions always exisits other than bio-degradable streams. To cut down the green house gas emissions in the part of wate management, prority shall be given for recycling followed by landfill after required stabilisation.

Thanks for the detailed answer.

So now we have one thing settled i.e waste management can be used for tracking the GHG emission but not in standard.

Waste Management can be used in case data about the waste disposal is maintained.What I need now is if there is any standard data available that can be used with waste management to map the waste to GHG emission based on disposal method.

I know this is going out of SAP scope to standard EH&S practices in the industry.But my aim is to leverage Waste Management capabilities to track GHG emissions from non conventional sources which goes unaccounted in many industries.

GHG emissions depends upon the disposal method opted, besides mode of transportation to disposal point, type of fule used for disposal, scope of stabiliation needed before disposal. The important part of waste management is handling & disposal of hazardous waste that generates mostly from chemical and pharma industries. This is wastey non bio-degradable in nature almost from all the streams in these type of industries. Some part of waste can be re-used in down stream/ ancillary industries/ intermdiate manufacturing units. In this case based on the level of purification needed before re-use also contibutes for GHG. However, most of the other streams may not be fit to re-use/ recycle, this streams will be disposed for well designed lanfill and incineration. In the case of landfill, the landfill waste after few days of retention in the secured landfill again generates leachate and some extent of VOC's (volatile organic chemicals). capturing of these secondary waste and its disposal again generates GHG. In the case of incinerable waste disposal method, non conventional fuels are used extensively and contiributes for large volume of GHG. No standard data can be established/ available even for similar waste streams disposed off, only few assumptions may be taken into account to map the carbon footprint in disposal methods for simplification of the estimations.

to use waste mgmt to track GHG emissions, it is suggested to go through environmetnal lifecyle asessment for a product. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) models the complex interaction between a product and the environment from cradle to grave. It is also known as Life Cycle Analysis or Ecobalance. Go thru it. Say industrial activity is major contributor for hazardous waste streams, who are palying vital role for safe disposal of these streams. Further to track GHG emissions from waste management, the path of the final disposal mode for a specific waste must be taken into account. To make account of the GHG emissions from all non-conventional sources, it is better taken up the inventory and production capacities for each product-wise, preferable go with top offenders.

Hello

Waste Management is used to handling waste disposal process. It take care from generation, transportation and Disposal by means of proper permits. It also helps to generate necessary documents for disposal processes and calculation of costs.

Coming to Use of Waste Management for Green House Gases - this module only helps in disposal processes and it is not possible to track the green house gases. may be you can categorize waste as Decomposable material, non decomposable material track green house gases by means of equation or you can use transportation path and Distance to calculate the emissions. These are not present in Standard system you need to develop custom programs for that.

SAP already has one Module called SAP Emission management (SAP EHS Environmental Performance)- which helps to calculate green house gases from different processes by means of facility, process, fuel consumtpion and other parameters.
