PPM - Created Item as Project instead of Item

I mistakenly created a item as a project instead of an item.

As a result I have a project but no item.

I'm wondering that if I create the item (without selecting the Create project on saving checkbox) can I then link them. Is this possible? if so, how?

If not, is my only option to create the Item as normal and leave the "Create project on saving" checkbox ticked (this is defaulted in) ?
