The recently released integration of the Sustainability Control Tower and the SAP EHS sustainable operations dashboard for SAP Analytics Cloud are great tools to analyze GHG emissions in your SAP EHS Environment Management system.

But sometimes, you just want to run a quick query on your data. You can do this easily with out-of-the-box tools provided by SAP S/4HANA and S/4HANA Cloud Public and Private Edition, as shown in this blog post.


Precondition: The following description requires that your GHG emission inventory is set up as described in my blog post Manage Your Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Inventory with SAP EHS Environment Management.

Open the Environmental Data Query



  1. Open the application View Browser

  2. You will see a huge list of views, but right now we're only interested in one: Type C_EHSAmountsQuery in the search box inside the table's toolbar and hit Enter.

  3. You should see one result line with the view and its description "Environmental Data - Query". You can find more information about this CDS view in the SAP help documentation.

  4. Check the table row's selection box and choose Show Content in the table toolbar.

  5. Now, the analytical query app opens for the "Environmental Data - Query" and gives you an overwhelming list of filter fields. But don't worry, I'll explain you the required input.


Select Your GHG Data



  1. Date Selection: If you want see data for a particular year, enter it in the Year field. Otherwise, you can define a time range using the Date field.

    1. For that, Choose the value help icon of this field and then choose the Define Conditions tab.

    2. Now, you can enter the from and end date of the range.

    3. Choose Ok to confirm your selection.



  2. Unit of Measurement: Enter TO for metric tons.

  3. Status: Choose Approved (02) from the value help.

  4. Data Period: Choose the data period that you're interested in from the value help, for example Monthly.

  5. Location Type: If you want to see all GHG data, choose the location type Plant. (EHFND_LTY_PLNT) and Site (EHFND_LTY_SI) from the value help.

  6. Location ID: If you want to see only specific locations, you can list their numeric IDs in the Define Conditions tab of the value help or type them directly in the field. You find the numeric IDs in the Manage Locations app. Otherwise, skip this field.

  7. Subject Type: Choose Listed Substance (03) from the value help.

  8. Subject ID: Open the value help and change the search operator for Subject Name from between to equal to. Now, enter the value L00000275188 which is for carbon dioxide equivalent and close the dialog with OK.

  9. Data Classifier: To select the GHG data, you enter all the main data classifiers in the value help that you are interested in. to add a new row, click on the small "+" button.

  10. Main Location ID: To see only the data underneath a location in the location hierarchy, enter the numeric location ID of the desired top location in the Define Conditions tab of the value help or directly in the field.


For example, your selection screen may look like that:



TIP: You can save your entered data as a new selection variant, so you don't need to enter it again and again. Just click on the little arrow next to the "Standard" title text and choose Save As. Give it a name and confirm with the Save button. You can retrieve your input later by clicking on the little arrow and choosing your saved variant.

Analyze Your GHG Data


After clicking the Go button, you should see a summary of all your GHG data like this:


You can start now to drill down into your data, by dimensions from the Available Fields to the table's rows () or columns ().


For example, start with the Data Classifier as rows:


You can also use the Graphical Display feature display a chart.

But first you might want to remove all unneeded measures: Expand the node Measures underneath Columns in the bottom-left area of the screen and remove all measures but Sum of Amounts by clicking on the minus ("-") icon next to them.

After choosing Graphical Display tab you should see a nice block diagram like this:


 

Now, it's up to you to do a further drill down into your GHG data, for example by adding the Location ID and Location Name fields.

Use Cases


Here are just a few examples for possible drill downs:

Get Information about Compliance Scenario Activities


If you want to drill down into the individual compliance scenarios, you can add its Activity ID and Activity Title to see the compliance scenario activities.

Get Information about Individual Data Records


In case you want to see the individual data records, add the fields Amount Key (which uniquely identifies a single data records - it's value doesn't matter for you), Timestamp, Activity ID and Activity Title, Location ID and Location Name. This should give enough of context to identify the records.

You can also restrict the data further, for example by limiting the Activity Type to Calculations.

Troubleshooting


If you don't see the GHG data you're looking for in the View Browser, SAP Sustainable Control Tower or in the Sustainable Operations Dashboard for SAP Analytics Cloud, then probably something in the compliance scenario activity's is wrong.

Goto the compliance scenario and compare its properties with the values required for the GHG data inventory.

For example here is a calculation result that doesn't appear in the GHG data:


 

Have you already caught the error? Yes? Perfect! But if not, you can check it with the View Browser app.

  1. Start the "Environmental Data - Query" from the View Browser and select the standard variant, so that all the selection fields are empty or use the reset option from the settings.

  2. Copy the activity's numeric ID from the title, switch to the query, paste it in the search field Activity ID, and press Go.

  3. You should see some data now.

  4. Add the following rows to the table:

    1. Date: The day must be at the end of the period your looking for

    2. Data Period: Your desired data period

    3. Unit of Measurement: t (TO)

    4. Subject Type: Listed Substance (03)

    5. Subject ID: L00000275188

    6. Data Classifier: Exactly one of the main GHG data classifier. For example: Scope 1, Scope 2 Location-based, Scope 2 Market-based, Scope 3. Additional data classifiers are allowed.

    7. Preliminary Result: # (No)

    8. Status: Approved (02)



  5. Plant ID (if you want to import the data in SAP Sustainable Control Tower)

  6. Check if you can find the error

  7. Otherwise, for all the selection criteria mentioned in Select Your GHG Data, enter the value, press Go and check if the data is still visible. When the data disappears, you know which of the settings in the compliance scenario is wrong.


In this example case, the data disappears as soon as you enter TO for Unit of Measurement, because accidentally KG have been used.

Changing the value for Data Period, Unit of Measurement, Subject Type and Subject ID requires to delete the activity and thus deleting it's data as well and creating it newly with the right values.
