Employee clocking in at 11:30PM for a midnight shift

Greetings-

I asked this on the partner board before it was shut down, but never got a clear answer.  Hoping I can get one here.

I have a client who has shifts that begin at midnight. Midnight shifts are not capable of using Cross Midnight Bandwidth.  The scenario we are most concerned with is if an employee clocks in at 11:30pm for a midnight shift.  SF will treat this time as belonging to the day before the shift instead of the day of.  This is particularly concerning in cases where the shift begins a new week.

What options do we have for this scenario? I was hoping to use a rule to split at midnight, then create a new time record that begins at midnight (in the new week), but this doesn't seem possible based on preliminary testing and posts I have seen.  I saw where one company had split the clock time on the way into SF.

Is there a recommended approach for this scenario? It's not exactly an edge case, so hoping there is workable solution out here somewhere.

Hi btoombs,

unfortunately there is no good workaround at the moment. We have this topic on our backlog list and I hope we can provide a decent solution for it in 2025 - but no comittments on this.

I don´t see any workaround to be honest. Logical day assignment and correct overtime calculation is quite complex and at least I don´t a way to overcome it via business rules or time valuations (else we would have already provided a solution / blog post on it).  Some customers have for example a combined daily and weekly overtime calculation and you cannot always take for granted that hours recorded before the shift are overtime, might be he leaves earlier that day or has some unpaid leaves during the week (in the case of weekly overtime calcuation).

The only thing I see is that you cut out those times before 00:00 and create an alert on it. And then an admin would need to create manual allowances to get the employee paid an overtime premium. I know, not ideal....

Sorry for not being able to give a more positive answer - we know the urgency of this topic and as mentioned, plan a solution for it.

Best regards

Thank you Volker! Appreciate the clarity. My only feedback is that it would be great if SuccessFactors could make these types of limitations (based on the backlog) available somehow so that customers/consultants can be made aware. That said, in my experience the SF Time is one of the best teams at SF at communicating system behavior to the customer/consultant community. Keep up the good work!

@btoombs: Thanks for the feedback - I will leave for early retirement end of year but we will ensure that monitoring and answering in this community will be continued. It is a good way of interaction with direct customer problems / requirements. Best regards, Volker
