Best option to forecast line item details

Here is high level need, wondering what is the best option to forecast line item details.

An option that I have used in the past is to add a dimension called line item detail (Detail 1, Detail 2, etc.) then use the comments functionality to capture the free form text. Any other suggessions?

Is there any other option that any one have used to capture line item details other than the artificial/dummy dimension and IDs along with comments?
