Why item division is sales document type should always be checked ? And if it is not checked then how it will effect reports ?
The best way to learn from such queries is that you should test in your system by creating two sale orders; one with checking the Division and one with blank and see how system is functioning. You will come to know the difference between these.

It completely depends on the client & the business process involved.
If your client wants to send all different division materials into a same transaction (with some other header division)-then this field will be activated.
So the performance evaluations will be based on sales order+line item+material+division combinations.further we may bill separately for this division wise materials controlled by copy controls.
If this field is unchecked-then header division will be defaulted into item level.(so the division wise product performance evaluations will be separate for such cases)
