What is the reason to maintain multiple addresses for one storage location?

I noticed that in maintaining the storage location(tcode OX09), the system allows multiple addresses for one single storage location by entering the different number.

1. What is the business scenario applies here for multiple addresses for storage location?

2. How does the system determine which storage location address to be used?

1. There is no specific thumb rule for this. If any Business wants to differentiate the stock based on certain parameters like Handling Unit materials in one location and non-handling unit materials in another location or Packaging and non-packaging materials and so on
2. System will always default the first one and if you want to consider multiple addresses, you need to go with EXIT_SAPLMMDA_001 to add the required coding
