What is the advantage of configurable material and variants?

What is the use/advantage of configuration material and variants.. Same can be achieved by defining 2 different materials..

Hi,

Configurable material is useful if you have a large number of combination of parts that go into a product. It means different permutations and combinations of the parts for same material. A configurable material is a material for which different variants are possible.

The strategies for configurable materials allow you to plan products with an almost unlimited number of possible combinations of characteristics and combination value keys.It is generally used in Made To Order (MTO) environment.

Advantages of Variant Configuration

No need to Create separate material master for each variant combination.

· Super BOM and Super Routing is enough for representing all possible Variants and Operations.

· Able to react more flexible to customer demands.

· Increase Information exchange between sales, engineering and production.

Configurable material has all the possible combinations of a particular material available to it.

You are right that every time you need you can create a new material, you do not need to create configurable material. But this works when possible combination of particular class of material is fairly simple. If you have just couple of combinations for a particular material than there is no need to define configurable material.

But if have a very complex product which has many variants possible, with dependencies to be configured, it is advicable to go for configurable material as compared to creating those many material codes.

Also, reporting becomes simpler and more accurate in such cases.

Configurable material is Especially used in Variant configuration This Material Has Non Stock items in Item cat Group in BOM and We can Define Characteristic and Dependencies to this type of materials and we can call this material to production or some other orders by using condition Types and For Configurable material We use special Cases in Material Master such as Defining the strategy ...
