Serial Number

Hi All,

I'd like to know if Plant Maintenance is required to be able to assign serial number for inventory in the MM module.

In our implementation, Plant Maintenance is out-of-scope (we're about to start the Blueprint phase). But we also have a need to record serial number during goods receipt.

My understanding is that Plant Maintenance is required to record serial numbers for inventory. This is based on the following passage that I found in the MM book.

“The configuration of the serial number profile should be performed with the aid of a Plant Maintenance Consultant who will ensure that the customer’s requirements for Plant Maintenance are taken into account”.

The book also documents the navigation path to define serial numbers as follows:

IMG - > Plant Maintenance and Customer Serivce-> Master Data in Plant Maintenance and Customer Service -> Technical Objects -> Serial Number Management - > Define Serial Number Profiles -> Serial Number Profile.

HI,

S.no. is used for following purpose.

1. To Track & manage inventory of equipment.

explanation - suppose that we are having 5 similar no. of equipment. in MM material code is only one. by the help of this material code we can make PR for any no. of equipments.

Now At the time of GR. we Provide S.NO. to each piece of material. so that we can identify each peice of material individually.

at the time of goods issue... one piece of material has bee issued to instrument department and another one has been issued to Mechanical Department.

by the help of S.No. MM People can track which peice of material has been issued to whom.

2. Refurbhisment of Spares in store.

Explanation - suppose that 100 No. of pieces are kept in store.

here material code is same for all peices.

now take a case that one piece is defective...

now maintenance persone want to cary out maintenance work on that defective piece....

so here once again we will use S.No. to identify that piece of material....

3. Connectivity between equipment master to material master

S.no. connect equipment master to Material Master.

so that we can track individual equipment....

for this we have to assign s.no. profile in the Material master in plant/storage tab.

hi jamal,

i would tell you in a simple language,

1.With the help of serial number profile you can mention for which business transaction you want serial nos(xample:-goods receipt) and here you can mention eqpt category,with or without eqpt(creation of eqpt master record at the time of goods receipt).

2.You can use this in mm01 for any material type,but serial no profile is under the control of PM.

Serial numbers do utilise some limited PM functionality. Every individual serial number results in an equipment record being created (table EQUI). In customizing at the path mentioned (or transaction OIS2), you can define an equipment category to be used. The equipment category should be linked to a number range that must be internally generated (trans. OIEN). Once this is setup you don't need to use any PM functionality again. These equipments will be created unknown to the users. Unless you specify differently only minimum equipment data is created and this equipment data is not a fully equipment so not visible through normal transactions.
