SAP R/3 4.6 C to ECC 6.0 Upgrade using CU &UC method- Unicode conversion

I am working on upgrade from R/3 4.6C to ECC 6.0.

ECC 6.0 upgrade completed( still in non Unicode). Now I am in the process of Unicode conversion.

I have used following methods for the upgrade.

1. Combined Upgrade & Unicode conversion(CU & UC)

2. Resource minimized( as I am doing it in Sandbox).

As I understand I need to perform the DB export and Import now for the unicode conversion.

According to the Upgrade document, First I need to run Export using R3load in ECC6.0(Non unicode)

and then install Unicode system and import the same data file.

My understanding was, when I choose, Resource minimized, I need to run Export and import

in the same system.

Can you please help me , whether I need another Unicode system for import ??

I have completed the Upgrade now. Now the system is Unicode with ECC 6.0.

Now i'm doing the CU&UC, upgrade to ECC6.0 No unicode.....

In the additional preparation steps (after upgrade and before unicode) is neccesary to launch the RADCUCNT??, or is not necessary because is executed automaticaly in the SAPup in the phase RUN_RACUCNT_ALL and RUN_RADCUCNT_NEW??

Otherwise, how many time has you taken the CU&UC?

Hello Alfredo,

Yes,RADDCUNT phase is called during upgrade i.e after ACT_700 however there are other phases which also touches your repository and thats why SAP recommends to run the SPUMG again.

You have to do pre-conversion steps before starting unicode conv. which is mandatory otherwise you have problems during exp/imp.

remember you dont have to run manually RADDCUNT report until you phase problem instead follow simple document steps.

[Additional Preparation Steps in SAP NW 7.0 non-Unicode]

In 46C you run Tcode - SPUM4 and ECC600 non-unicode tcode-SPUMG.

The RADDCUNT is launch automatically in the SAPup, so finally i've not launch it manually.

Preconversion steps have been done correcly and now we've launch the export.

Only we have opened amessage because we've the basis 11 and say that the job UMG_ADD_STEP_PREP, is executed automatically be the report UM4_FINISH_PREPARATION, but when the report has finished correctly we've seen the jobs executed and the name UMG_ADD_STEP_PREP doesn't appear.

We have done all as the Guide, but this is an anormal situation.

You can still Run report UMG_ADD_PREP_STEP if it is not called automatically.same problem i also had it so i ran in background mode it worked.

With SAP_Basis 7.00 Support Package 11 and higher UMG_ADD_PREP_STEP is started automatically as batchjob during UM4_FINISH_PREPARATION. There is no manual handling required.

Small care you need to take while executing this report.

se38: UMG_ADD_PREP_STEP next select on folder reports and click on background button or from menu you can select execute in background. refresh screen until all steps turns to green status or you can also monitor job:UMG_PMIG_PREP_JOB.

Hello Vamshi!.

Now i've launch the next steps (after the UM4_FINISH_PREPARATION) and the export without executing manually this batch UMG_ADD_PREP_STEP......... I'm going to have problems????.

I've opened a message with SAP and they have said us no info.

So, the export will be ok? or i have to return to do all the steps and launch again the export??.

And i've basis 11 700, but i've not seen this job executing the report UM4_FINISH_PREPARATION, but may be executed the SDBI_POOL_CLEANER without see it??

Hello Alfredo,

If your export was smooth you dont have to worry abt the step UMG_ADD_PREP_STEP.However If you have a chance of doing export again you can execute report UMG_ADD_PREP_STEP and then start export.

you mentioned about having run the report UMG_ADD_PREP_STEP manually & while running UMG_FINISH_PREPARATION has called the report UMG_ADD_PREP_STEP.

what SAP said for this?

Hello Graham!:

Now i'm doing the CU&UC.

First we have done a homogeneous copy from our source system 46C MDMP in a additional system

Second we have upgraded the additional system from 46C to 620, for doing some steps of abap preparations, and we have problems with the RADNTLANG.

I think you have to do the export/import in the same system, following the next steps:

- export.

- uninstall all.

- import.

Otherwise, can you help me in the CU&UC? Nobody know nothing abour this....

Thanks for your reply. I am not using MDMP in my upgrade. Ours is single code page.

By the way, what's the exact error you are getting in your PREPARE phase ?

Doing abap steps preparation in the additional system migrated from 46C to 620, we have the problem to select the object changed in the RADNTLANG, to insert all of them in a trasport, and use it in the source system.

If you are using CU&UC approach,Dont try to change the Objects after RADDCUNT job processed.

I dont understand the approach...why you want to transport the objects to source.can you try to explain clearly.

The process of CU&UC is like this....

1.Prepare

2.Unicode pre-conversion as per unicode doc

3.Upgrade(to ECC non-unicode)

a.After ACT_700 phase RADDCUNT job executes

4.Unicode pre-conversion(for new objects which came in upg)

Here RADDCUNT executed again using as per steps given in unicode doc.

5.Export prepare

6.Export data

7.Prepare target database using sapinst

8.Import data

9.post conversion steps

Here is my doubt:

I have selected, Resource minimized method for the upgrade, So I believe, I need not have separate Unicode system for Data Import.

DO I need to build separate unicode system for import ?

The chosen upgrade strategy is NOT related to the necessity of the separate system, it´s just for the upgrade itself.

AS say Markus the CU&UC is for doing the Project from 46C MDMP (in my case code pages 1100 and 1401) to Ecc6.0 unicode.

For this is neccesary an additional system, to migrate the 46C to a 620, and do some ABAP preparation steps, one of them is launch the report RADNTLANG.

Finally we know that this program has to be launch in this additional system, and in the source system after upgrade/before unicode.

Hi,

Dont get confused with upg strategy and unicode conversion.

In general Upgrade strategy (either downtime-minimized/resource minimized)

In unicode conversion you have export/import(exp/imp) of data concept

In CU&UC approach you have to do in a streach to complete migrate from old release to new realease ECC 6.00.

Using database independent (sapinst only) or Using database dependent (migration monitor or Distribution monitor)

It can be done in 2 ways.

If you dont have addtional server for unicode conversion

1)you can either do exp on same hardware and take bakup and do import using the exp dump.

2)Do exp on one server and prepare your target empty database on another server and complete imp of data.
