Retro is triggered automatically by the payroll program if there is back dated change in payroll data. This change in data updates a date in Payroll Status infotype (IT0003) field Earliest Master data change.

The payroll program checks this date & triggers retroactive accounting.

For eg. if there is a back dated change in Basic pay Infotype, Org. assignment Infotype, etc.

By back dated change I mean change in data for period for which payroll has already being run.

Also, retro can be triggered forcefully through the payroll program itself by specifying date of force retro. This is normally done when there is back dated change in configuration settings.

I hope the explanation will be helpful
