Hi,
If you are looking for conceptual clarity on project progress, Project Management Institute (PMI)'s user manual would be more appropriate than SAP documentation. SAP's own progress analysis techniques are based on PMI guidelines.
Despite diffrerent methodologies described, the overwhelming recommendation in SAP is to assess progress based on actual cost incurred. That is, cost incurred expressed in terms of cost planned up to a key date is considered the POC.
In this context, you will come across terms such Budgted cost of work Scheduled (BCWS), Budgeted Cost of Work Performed (EV), Actual cost of work Performed, Schedule Variation (SV), Cost variation (CV). Again, Weighing factors are used to give different WBS elements / elements to properly aggregate the POC of various elements.
I know these are some general stuff. The subject is quite big. More specific queries could trigger more specific discussion.
