PMS/OSA in ECC 6.0, Ehp4: No Portal

Hello Experts,

The client is expecting OSA to be configured. However, there is no EP available. All employees has employee licenses.

Do we need to go with the old appraisal setting or the new one? If portal is not available, can the employees use the template via browser?

Thanks!

You can use OSA without a portal, unless you activate the new OSA delivered in EHP4.

This new OSA works with Webdynpro for ABAP but are based on portal navigation. The older version works on BSP without a portal.

Thank you Luke, Wilfred, Andy and Michael. Have awarded points for your excellent inputs.

@Michael: The new UI is a really good. A lot of users are going to be happy about this.

Sorry about not raising the query clearly. The client is interested in the employee appraisal functionality alone. Objectives will set at year beginning, a mid year review and final appraisal. The current paper based process is to be migrated to SAP.

Could you also please provide some links to learn more about functionalities and configuration of OSA/PMS.

Aravind,

I think this is an interesting question you raise. If I find the business package for PM/OSA - PAOC_HAP(?) in transaction SE80 - I can actually launch the MSS iView for Performance directly without any portal by choose the "test" functionlaity on one of the Web Dynpros.

Interesting enough one of the issues we've faced at my client is the fact that when we send workflows through email to the user regarding performance management, the link to the actual document is stored on the ECC side and it asks for backend login (not portal login). After entering the login credentials, the user accesses the document (again, no portal login has taken place). So I think it might be quite possible to implement Performance Management without a portal system and maybe a few custom workflows that route to email? Another possiblity would be to send a link to the POWLs instead of the actual appraisal document, but I don't think all the funcitonality of the POWLs would work (i.e creating queries, changing layouts, etc. for the POWL).

Hope that helps,

Hong

Hello Hong,

Thanks for the information, this would have been the approach till a few days back. Now we are in a dilemma.

With EHp5, (/people/bernhard.escherich/blog/2011/01/18/ehp-5-ess-the-architects-view) it seems that we can have WD ABAP-based ESS with NWBC without SAP NetWeaver Portal. This is freakin awesome!!!

So the question is can we have the new appraisal system without EP using NWBC only?

so aravind, it looks like SAP is developing a strong alternative to go fully enterprise portal with java stack.

The netweaver business client is a new user interface that has a rich interface and handles integration of webdynpro (performance management).

if you wait till EP5, supposedly there is many standard HR roles that tie all the applications per role together. if you can't wait till ep5, you could configure a custom layout / roles to handle the MSS and ESS portions of the webdynpro.

i'll be pushing this idea more and more, in practice I don't know of anyone who has tried this yet, even though NWBC has been available for some time. i'm looking for someone to be the guinea pig.

here is the EP5 text on how they will deliver the HR ready roles for NWBC...obviously it looks nicer in the PDF format. Let me know if you have the EP5 detailed presentation. It's also readily available from service.sap.com

What do you mean by OSA? Can you be more clear about your requirements please.

Hi,

OSA = Objective Settings and Appraissals = Performance Management.

If you've no portal then you can grant users access to the corresponding back-end transactions (APPCHANGE) but this view is not really user-friendly.

I know what OSA stands for, but the acronym is not necessarily what they are implementing. And it isn't always Performance Management, which is why I ask the question.

Hi Luke,

just out of curiosity as I only know OSA as Objective Settings and Appraissals.

What can be meant/implemeted as well when people call out the acronym OSA. Maybe it will help me in preventing useless discussions in the future.

Wilfred.

Hi Wilfred,

OSA (Object Settings & Appraisals) is a generic term that covers any form of appraisal, whether this be specifically Performance Management (called PMP) or just appraising Training objects or maybe sales Objectives. I don't see much more than PMP implemented because I work mainly in HCM Talent Management.

OSA is powered by AES (Appraisals, Evaluations, and Surveys).

Best regards,

Luke
