We have MRP Controller & Production Scheduler.

Q1: In the production system, who will convert the planned order to production order in mass (MRP Controller or Production Scheduler)?

Q2: In the production system, who will release the production order in mass (MRP Controller or Production Scheduler)?

Q3: What are the responsibilities of MRP Controller and Production Scheduler?

Thanks

Hi Selva,

Before answering your questions, let's start with definitions. MRP Controller is a person or group of people who are responsible for MRP and material availability. They ensure that the materials required to manufacture the finished/semi-finished products are available on time at the right quantity. Production Scheduler (Production Supervisor) is a person or group of people who are responsible to ensure the plan created by the production planner is carried out.

Here we go with your questions.

Q1: In the production system, who will convert the planned order to production order in mass (MRP Controller or Production Scheduler)?

Typically, it is the MRP Controller. Back to the definition, he has to evaluate MRP results and generates receipts (order proposals) that in turn will provide the required materials. Then, he is the one who has to convert the orders. However, in the end, it depends on the policy on your company.

Q2: In the production system, who will release the production order in mass (MRP Controller or Production Scheduler)?

Typically, it is the Production Scheduler. He has to know the availability of resources and then releases the production order for execution accordingly. Again, this is flexible. It really depends on your organisations.

Q3: What are the responsibilities of MRP Controller and Production Scheduler?

MRP Controller:

  • Execute and evaluate MRP
  • Convert order proposals (planned orders)
  • Monitor stocks

Production Scheduler:

  • Monitor the availability and usage of production resources
  • Release production orders
  • Monitor the production execution and confirmations

Please note that in this reply I am using the term Production Scheduler and Production Supervisor interchangeably as you can see it this way also in SAP. Find more details about roles in SAP PP in this link: http://goo.gl/wdYiL6

Hi,

Simply,

Q1. MRP Controller

Q2. For this you can use either MRP Controller or Production Scheduler depending on your requirement. See the selection screen of COHV transaction where you can have MRP Controller and Production Scheduler both.

Q3. In my previous company we had a MRP controller for each level of processing. ie: FG, SFG Stage 1, SFG Stage 2

MRP controller can be used for MRP related transactions.Production scheduler can be used for the categorization purpose as appropriate. These two fields are important when executing reports. You can explore COOIS, MD16,MD73 transaction to see how these two concepts can be used in real practice.
